shotgun hunting - how many shells?

Look on page 17 of the 2005-2006 hunting regs.

"It is unlawful to hunt...with a pump, repeating or auto-loading shotgun with a magaine capable of holding more then two shells."

Unless.... technically speaking, a "shotgun" with a rifled barrel is a rifle. So *maybe* you could get away with using a rifled barreled shotgun on deer/wolf/grouse with more then two in the mag.

But hunting migratory game birds with a rifle is illegal, so it would still be illegal to use a rifled barrel on a "shotgun" with 4 in the mag when hunting ducks and geese.

Look to see a change in this regulation in the new regulatons, which shoudl be out soon.

The BCWF passed a resolution to amend the regs to say "3 rounds when hunting birds" last year, it probably will be implemented this year.

There is really no real reason to have a 3 round restriction for non birds, as you can hunt in BC with a 30 round bolt action rifle if you wish.;)

I'm nto even sure that it really makes alot of sense for birds, either, but I am nto much of a duck hunter...:)

Thanks GH! That is the news I was looking for. I hope this change does in fact take place this year.
How we will be able to prove what we are hunting could be interesting..... Better not have any 7 1/2 shot on you when you say you are hunting bear! Plus have a bear tag. ;)

As far as hunting birds goes, I suppose it is not sporting to be able to fill the sky with steel as the birds fly by. I'm not too much of a duck hunter either, although I have tried it, and got two ducks on three shots.

In Ontario, from the 2006 general regulations, page 21:

You must plug a semi-automatic or repeating shotgun so that it will not hold more than a total of three shells in the chamber and magazine combined.
