Shotgun in your vehicle?

the point is that you ARE allowed to legally carry a shotgun in your car at all times. whether or not you are hunting/ target shooting or aren't isn't the point.

There was a pole done with regards to who carries a firearm in their vehicle, look it up. On the notion of rust. Who cares, its a shotgun. With a little bit of REGULAR MAINTENANCE and fore thought you can avoid any rusting issues. You could just paint the shotgun for rust protection..

I believe that if you wish to store a shotgun in your car you must follow storage rules, not transport rules. Personally, I plan to do it with a Dominion mag fed shotgun. Trigger locked ammo seperate, or locked case ammo seperate will be the way i go.

You think so? I'm pretty sure that if you store it out of sight (without a trigger lock) you are legally OK.

It clearly states:
(b) is rendered inoperable by a secure locking device, unless the individual reasonably requires the non-restricted firearm for the control of predators.

So no trigger lock might be a little dicey.

By the time you took off the trigger lock and loaded it you could have missed the fight per say. Which is of course EXACTLY what the laws are designed for. It makes it almost worthless to carry one in a car. Sickening I know..

Way to take things out of context. Section 3 applies to a very specific situation. What it clearly states...

(3) If, in a remote wilderness area that is not subject to any visible or otherwise reasonably ascertainable use incompatible with hunting, an individual is transporting a non-restricted firearm in an unattended vehicle that is not equipped with a trunk or similar compartment that can be securely locked, and the vehicle or the part of it that contains the non-restricted firearm cannot be securely locked, the individual shall ensure that the non-restricted firearm

(a) is not visible; and

(b) is rendered inoperable by a secure locking device, unless the individual reasonably requires the non-restricted firearm for the control of predators.

If you're in the backwoods on a hunting trip, and you leave your ATV (which has no locking compartment) and your rifle for a while (because you're taking a dump or skinny dipping or something), then you need to put a secure locking device on it. Heck if you're in bear country (which is most of Canada) you could likely fight any safe storage charge based on the end of section (b).

so is it agreed that you can legally have a non-restricted firearm in your car unattended without a trigger lock IF the vehicle is locked, for long periods of time?

You can do anything you want without repercussion until you get caught. Believe what you will with regards to the law and take your chances or play it safe its your call...

Ok so keeping a shotgun in the trunk is bad because of the damp conditions.....Any ideas on cheap ways to carry it so it is protected.....

Hopefully not to make this too political but....

You must admit that way too many of the laws (and not just gun laws) are reaching the point of ABSURD.
We have clearly seen this more than once in history. We seem pretty slow to catch on to this in North America though. Wonder if the same denial happened in each of those cultures? It sure never worked out for anyone before to say the least.
Confusion over the law is also part of these terrible examples of history.

Back to confusion over guns and vehicles.

When I'm roaming near my home which is in a rural area, I usually have my HP9 'rinco in the truck, trigger locked in a case, and ammo in a locked container. Makes it absolutely useless for anything other than putting down somthing that got hit on the road, but, I like having it around.

When I drive back and forth to work in the big smoke, I usually don't have it with me. But sometimes I forget to take it out of the truck. :D

IMO if you are moving it in and out of the trunk frequently for maintenance, it defeats the entire purpose of 'leaving a shotgun in your trunk'. so the way i see it you can either:

-get one of the marine shotguns (~$500)

-put it in an airtight case like a Pelican (~$200)

-get a utility gun that wont upset you if it rusts, and put a thin coat of something like hoppe's gun grease on it (not oil), including running a patch with it through the bore and coating trigger components, etc.
leave the tube of grease and a rag in the trunk so if you use it you can reapply. try to get the gun off the floor/carpet and away from any moisture-absorbing material, worst case put it in a heavy gauge plastic bag like what guns ship in. (~$2)

I usually have my Marlin guide gun under the seat when running around at home and work in rural Alberta, although it comes in the house with me most of the time for maintainance reasons.

I don't like leaving a firearm in the truck when I'm in the city, just because I'm worried about having it stolen. If I was going to keep a dedicated 'truck gun' in the vehicle I'd go with either a full stainless rifle/shotgun or something cheap and simple like a norinco, and probably store it in some sort of oil-impregnated soft case or wrap behind or under the seat.

Is it legal to leave an unrestricted firearm in the truck - Yes, as long as you follow the regulations. Heck, lots of people on here will tell you it's illegal to drive around with a shotgun or rifle visible in a back-window rack, but that's BS too as long as you're in the truck.

When I am driving around, Ioften have a shotgun or rifle sitting on the seat next to me, uncased and ammo in the cup holder.
When I leave my vehicle, the firearms is either in my hand or out of sight with the doors locked.
( I have been really getting used to remote locks this year)

Haven't used it myself, but I remember reading somewhere that hunters in Alaska coat their guns with some kind of paste wax. Seems to keep the metal in good shape despite the harsh weather.

I would need to dig that article to get the details, maybe someone here uses that trick?
