Shotgun magazine capacity question

Hey All,

All my hunting life I understood that shotgun capacity was 2 in the mag and one in the chamber.

I've double checked this in the Alberta regs and it says when hunting game birds you can only have 3 shots.

My question is, does that apply to shotgunning varmints like crows, magpies, pigeons and the like? And what about coyotes? Or even deer?

Can I take out my plug on my pump while shooting these critters?

I know this doesn't really help but in BC our regs state:

"It is unlawful to hunt with a set gun, or to hunt wildlife with a pump, repeating or auto-loading shotgun with a magazine capable of holding more than two shells. Where the use of a shotgun is allowed for hunting or trapping big game, an unplugged shotgun holding more than 2 shells and firing single projectiles only (slugs) may be used."

So roughly it states if you arent hunting big game you must have it plugged. If you are hunting big game it doesn't have to be plugged but you can only have slugs.

two shot limit in the mag is a federal law for migratory bird hunting only. other species varies by province. In ON a it applies to all hunting uses of a shotgun- migratory birds or non-migratory, deer, bear ,whatever.

Yes thanks, but is dispatching varmints considered hunting in our case?

(Alberta) Anyone?

It is unlawful to:
# hunt any game bird using

* a shotgun in which the magazine and chamber combined will hold more than three rounds of ammunition,
* a trap, or
* bait.

Pigeons, crows, gophers etc are not a game bird, for that matter neither are deer etc, so good to go. I hunt pigeons with a 9 round mag all the time.

That was my take on it. Just wanted another varmint basher's opinion.

Thanks.
