Any suggestions on how to carry a shotgun (old 870) on an old style Jeep (no doors, no roof) or ATV in the bush. Needs to be i) totally safe and ii) accessible. Do not want to spend any significant money - need a really cheap or homemade solution. Ideas appreciated !

Thanks

Safe and legal means unloaded. For the jeep, I would fab up a rig so you had the shotgun between the seats, either flat (beside the shifters) or like a cop car up by the dash. More info could help to figure out the best spot.....is the jeep an automatic or standard? Are you right handed, or left handed? What is the barrel length of your "old 870"?

Jeep is standard, an old CJ5. I'm right handed. Barrel length is 22". Also sometimes have kids in the passenger seat ! Thanks.

On the Jeep, the best two options I can think of is a holder that attaches to the seat backs and hold the gun tight to the back of the cushions or a rack that attaches to the roll bar. The roll bar system I like and can be fabricated from velcro.

The best system on a bike is across the handle bars if you are in open country. If you are in the thick stuff a scabbard arrangement as described above is better.

Make sure you know the local laws... here in your vehicle... unloaded but on an ATV or Snowmobile, it must be cased as well.

Does your Jeep have roll bars? that's where I might put it.

For me, in my vehicle, it is between the seats wether I have a passenger or not, just watch your not plugging your bbl with floor mud!

You could also mount an ATV scabbard on your jeep, that would be cool!

Here are some products from Cabela's:

This one is specifically for JEEP and mounts behind the seats:

while sitting in your driver seat when you reach down on the left side of the seat to the floor there should be a space between the side of the seat and the body of the jeep a couple broom clips or velcro and a small 3-4" tall tin shield to keep floor mud away from the gun and your good to go. thats where i would put it in my jeep that way you reach down grab the slide and your good to go grab it on the fly or in an emergency situation.
this is how im thinking about doing it in my jeep tj but im not sure if the cjs are the same in the area im talking about as the tjs

7RM, I think in that position your gun will take a beating. The length between the raised box and the ramp of the firewall is quite short which means the gun would ride quite high with this placement. Getting in and out of the vehicle, you have to lift your foot high enough to clear the lip of the body tub, and if your TJ has a lift and big tires it will be that much higher. I think you'll have boot scrapes on your gun. That space between the seat and the tub lip tends to fill up with crap in the summer, and if you get water inside, well, it wouldn't be pretty. I think a location that keeps the gun higher off the floor is better, although the vertical position has some appeal if you can get by it as you enter and exit the vehicle. I'm on the big side, so I don't know if that would work for me either.

We mount a 1x4 board from the front rack to rear rack on left side of ATV, depends on what side you mount ATV. Leave enough room for your leg and keep case within width of ATV or you will pull it off in tight spots. You than mount a cheap wmart plastic gun case onto the board. I mount the board with two bungee cords. We use this set up on 4 bikes and it works great. Gun is handy. Sorry no pictures bikes in shed until snows gone. In Ontario the gun only has to be unloaded during legal hunting hours in or on a vehicle/atv.

tracker, your setup doesn't sound like it would be good if you ever got in a situation where you might roll? Unless I'm reading it wrong.

In your Jeep why not just have your passenger hold the gun.
Unloaded of course. Thats the law...
Question is to how fast your going to be driving I guess.
If your hunting kangaroos in the out back your @ full throttle.
If your hunting grouse you just need to creep along..
On your ATV it must be cased.

I'll say this, don't mount your firearms across the bars of your ATV.

I've seen quite a few bent firearms show up at the shops after rollovers, and trying to go between trees etc. :D

Duck Hunter it is held on by two bungees not bolted on and case protects your leg when bike tips/rolls/flips onto case side, acts a a seat belt. (been there done that) CSA approved system built by moose hunters during bull session. Patent pending. Would provide pictures but someone may try to steal it.
