Shotgun Optic? Red dot or optical? For deer.

Just looking to find out what most people use, I doubt very much if ill ever take a shot past 50 yards.

This is a Deer only gun Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag with 24" Rifled barrel, older gun before porting was a factory deal.

I just bought an Aimtech all Metal Saddle Rail for it currently being shipped. Got it for $27 CAD shipped NIB on ebay usa. So I can't beat that for the price.

I have never shot a red dot or have any experience much with scopes at all, but I do not like the Iron Sights on the gun so I am going this route.

I'd like to stay local or at least Canada for under $75-150.

I was quoted a Nikon Scope from Eli's in Simcoe for $100 is that a good deal?
 
If you're not going to be shooting out past 50 yards do you need the scope? I have a Mossberg 500 that I find shoots slugs with fair accuracy at 50 yards just using the factory bead. For me practice time paid off with this.

If you can set up the aimtech in time for the hunt that should be all you need. Ghost ring sights are the fastest setup around and are plenty accurate for 50 to 75 or even 100 for younger eyes.

If not I would go with a red dot. IT's main advantage would be for the dawn and dusk shots
 
Thing is I have unclear vision at distances etc. And I do not like the rifle sights on my 835, infact I think they are horrible (the rear sight).
 
i us a red dot for turkeys and a four power for deer .i found i could not get the consistence out of a red dot for slugs but thy work fine for shot DUTCH
 
I've had a red dot on my Rem 870 slug gun for about 15 years. I don't even think that the brand is around anymore- One V 30- I think they were made in Europe. Somewhere around here, I have an old target that I shot with my slug gun/ red dot combo. One ragged hole with 5 shots touching at 50 yrds.. The best buck I ever shot was with this combo, 10 years ago, at a paced off 115 yrds. Red dots are good in low light conditions and have highly cooperative eye relief. Some red dots that I've seen didn't show up well in bright light so it's best to check them in bright light before buying.
 
I picked up a slightly used BusHnell Trophy Red/Green 4 reticle for $45 CAD. Cheap investment to try it out and see what it is like, $120 US optic for $45 can't beat that.
