I'm looking to get something that will handle some recoil on a 20ga shotgun. Hoping to keep it under $100 if possible. The shotgun is a Mossberg 500 20ga cut down to 18.5" and is pretty much for just having fun at the range and will see a variety of ammo including slugs.

Right now I'm looking at the bushnell Trophy red dot with rings for $80 or a bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5x for $90. Open to suggestions for something better.

Hmmm. The budget is limiting, but Bushnell does make a Banner series scope that's referred to as a .22/shotgun model. Haven't used it myself, so I can't comment on quality, but there's a few in the Banner line that describe themselves as shotgun appropriate.
Cheers, Al

The Banner I was looking at is the 1.5-4.5x one that walmart has for $90. I figure between the bushnell warranty and walmart return policy I should be good if anything happens. I'm just not sure it's the "right" optic for what I intend on doing with this shotgun.

Get a dot. The magnified optic is good for a sabot slug gun, but a dot is fine out to 100yds. I'm running a Burris Fastfire II on my Mossberg 930. Prefer it to the Aimpoint Micro I had mounted. If you can wait a couple weeks until your match on Aug 11 you can give it a try.

I went and looked at the banner last night and think you are spot on Ron. It would be awesome on my slug gun but not so much on a tactical/range shotgun.

I like the Burris but the cheapest I have seen them is $200ish. I'm going to check out a few places this weekend since I will be down in Kingston. I appreciate the offer to try yours out but this was the gun I was planning on using that weekend :( I may just bring out my 12ga with rifled slug barrel but about $2 a round isn't cheap for just blasting away.

Oh, and a better look at what happens to crappy red dots
