I'm not into shotguns at all, but I'm thinking I should probably get one for around the house. What are my options on the $500.00 to $600.00 range and what would I get that is better at about the $1000.00 price point, and should I go there. I'm not looking to swap barrels etc, maybe mount a flashlight and that would be about it.

Best bang for the buck nowaday is Mossberge 590A1 retrograde if you don't mind the full size barrel. I would buy one if I wasn't a Remington guy to start with.

590A1 14". Compact, light, reliable. If wanting to save a bit more, the Maverick 88 security is the same basic action but with a crossbolt safety and irrelevantly plastic trigger group. Have had multiples of both in 14, 18.5" and 20". Would trust them with all my not-personal-defense-thats-illegal activities.

It would first help to clearly define what your intended usage is. "I should probably get one for around the house", could mean a lot of different things. Is it home defense you're considering?

This. Easy to modify to fit you using the right furniture (Magpul). You can also get a picatinny rail on top of it and throw an Aimpoint S-1 on there. Sling options are a bit tight, but with the right research you can set it up with a good convertible 1/2 point sling.

I have an 870 with a 14” barrel that I got before the Mossbergs with a 14” barrel were so easy to find now. That was the only reason I went 870. The Mossberg 500/590 slide release is in a far superior spot. With a pistol grip, the safety on the 870 might be better but a regular stock I think the Mossberg is better.

All good points.

I vote Winchester. Very fast and smooth action. Accessories are are limited. Made in Turkey but its much higher quality than the other turkish pumps. I have a 1200 but might re-buy an SXP defender as a back up shotgun

Unless of course you replace the OEM safety with a safety like the S&J Hardware 870 Combat Jumbo Safety for $20.

Will you lose your Remington membership if you buy a Mossberg?

Not about loyalty or anything but more like all the spare parts that I have for Remington 870. I have enough spares and receivers set to keep my Remmy runs until my grandchildren. As much as I want to believe things would last forever but anything are mechanical will break sooner or later.

Mossberg 500 ATI Scorpion. It's relatively light and ready to go for home defence and loaded with features. Just replace the crappy factory front sight if you want something a little better.

Nothing is really for 'around the house' unless you're on a farm. Then I'd take the extra length over a 14. That said, an 870 or 590 (a1 preferred) would set you up for life. They're tried and true, and will outlive most folk if taken care of.

Once upon a time I'd say look at the Winchester 1300 line, or a project Ithaca, but their prices are way up there now, and can no longer be considered 'budget' options.

What are reliable shooting distances on a 14" 590A1?

I haven't patterned mine yet but I was plugging pumpkins with #4 shot at about 20 metres and vaporizing them.

50 meter slug groups with a Remington Tac-14 ... 14" barrel .....
