Shotgun recommendation ?

Well if $1700 and you are a noob go to a gun shop and get off the comp because comps do not test fit guns. No one can tell you what you're going to like and how it will fit you.

What is the main game you are going to play? Shoot everything that you can lay your hands on. Most shooters will let you shoot their gun, if you ask. Buy a used gun and have someone that is knowledgeable have a good look at it before you buy. It is very unlikely that your first clay gun will be your last.

I was just curious if I should start with a high end model or start with a cheaper one.
Is there a must have shotgun out there ? Good price that shoots great etc etc

The range, price wise starts with a used 870 or 1100 at $400 to $500 to a number of trap combos at $20,000 plus for a new one (don't forget the taxes) .... A friend of mine just bought a new Seitz set up for trap doubles for $22,000 USD (taxes extra). On occasion he will be beaten by a fellow shooting an $800 30 year old Citori.

What would be a good all around shotgun for trap, skeet, clays for a noob ?

$1700 and under is my budget
In that price range the Beretta 391 semi-automatic is the best available gun for clay target shooting.

Winchester SX3 is a good gun for the money adjustable stock 3'' best gas system very simple gas push rod no action bars 3or4 versions the design has been around since 1972 . $1,100-$1,400.

Pretty much any shotgun from $300 to $1,700 will do the job, but what are the important characteristics to you? Action type, recoil attenuation, wood quality, prestige, reliability, durability, etc. Winchester pump or Benelli autoloader to double barrels and everything in between.

As has been well said earlier, the gun must FIT you in order to hit things.

One tactic is to just guy something right now, anything that will work. This gets you out shooting and in contact with other shooters and their guns. Talk to them, ask about their guns, most guys will be more than happy to let you use them if you are sincerely interested and respectful. As you are new, you probably don't have a lot of exposure or experience to shotguns, so be patient. But don't be afraid to buy and sell guns as your fancy changes, this isn't a lifetime decision. Shoot an 11-87, for example, this summer and find out what you like/dislike about it, and now you have something to compare against.

What is it that you are looking for, Over / Under or a semi auto ?

Lots of options out there dependant on what your looking for.

870 Wingmaster. Should run you in the 800 range

With a budget of $1700 the OP was looking for an all around Clay gun. The Wingmaster is a good gun but for "doubles" there are better choices. As already suggested the Beretta 391 would be a good choice also a new or used Citori U/O or Beretta U/O would also be better choices.

I'd get 2 or 3 shotguns.....1 870 wingmaster for hunting (that standard model is less "pretty" but it shoots the SAME btw just don't tell anyone on CGN that!) and a shorter "tactical" shotgun or even a coach gun for a different style of shooting :)
