Shotgun Reloading and Recycling

Hi folks,

My Club doesn't have a recycling program for shotshells, so I'm trying to learn more about them, and whether there is anything more than can be done besides throwing them in the garbage or burning them.

1. Reduce
(Not gonna happen - too much fun!)

2. Reuse
If I am able to collect freshly-fallen hulls, and sort them in such a way that reloaders would be interested in them, are there any brand names / model names that are more likely to be wanted than others? Are there any models that shouldn't even be attempted? In a typical shoot, I'm seeing plenty of Challenger and Score, Federal and Winchester (Super-X), and other oddballs, such as Black Cloud, or "Remington Gun Club", etc.

The idea would be to collect these same day as shot, before they get wet, sort, and any that could have value to reloaders, set aside for local pickup, or ship for the cost of shipping, if there was interest.

3. Recycle
I'm looking at this. I'm a tinkerer, so little challenges amuse me:
- Bases, I can easily muscle-off the bases, and the local curbside recycling program will take the bases, primers and all.
- Primers, Some of the primers have copper - I'm popping those out and hanging on to them until I decide if there's an easy way to pop those out (warning - do not use a decapping pin - if it slips off the primer anvil, you're out a pin!). If I can make a go of that, I don't mind salvaging brass primers, either.
- Hulls appear to be HDPE, but without the foolproof triangle, the solid waste committee is hesitant. Too bad the companies that turn plastic into 2x4s are so far away. I'm hanging on to a couple hulls to show people, but otherwise, they'll probably still go in the garbage. I wonder if anyone can use them as fuel...

Thoughts appreciated. There's no money to be made in this, obviously, it's just an experiment to see if a better disposal method is possible.

What happens at your Club / Range?

I'm probably going to see plenty of "+1"s, and "^ this" on this thread :)

Just looking for ideas. I'd imagine those who do reload are able to pick up decent stock from other local members? Which ones would a reloader want, or not want?

everything gets garbaged at my range. ive thought about scooping metal from the bin as i live 10 houses from a scrapyard.

At our range everyone that reloads generally picks up their own hulls. Anyone that doesn't reload generally shoots federal gun club ammo or stuff that isn't that great to reload anyway.

Winchester AA are the gold standard. Remington RXP are not far behind. This is because the heads are brass. There are brass plated steel ones and steel ones that are really not any good to reload. Don't get me wrong, you CAN reload them, but if you're doing thousands of them you can wear out the sizing dies on your press. I usually load a box or two (there's a few 50 gallon drums full of the federal gun club empties) for shooting on the sporting clays range because I'm never sure that I'll get them back.

Several members here collect hulls/and brass cases and resell them on our EE. One guy i have bought from here sells good quality sub gauge hulls from his O/U with extractors. It helps subsidize what appears to be a lot of clays shooting. Several other guys scoop the brass from the range and resell it to help pay for junior shooting at the club.

Brass, hulls and debris left at the range are one of the pet peeve's of many Range executives. Anything that cuts it down, needs someone to take the lead and enlist multiple members to be successful.

For Reuse:
Mentioned a bit all ready but the main hulls to be reloaded are Win AA, Fed Gold Medal and Rem STS or Nitro. All hulls can be reloaded to a degree but these are the most common due to being brass and not steel, there must be more but I can't think of them now. The thing to add is they need to be clean. Nobody wants to put dirt in there gun or brass that has turned green. There are ways to clean them but due to availability it is not worth it.

Only hulls worth loading that are commonly found in trash would have to be Gun Clubs. STS, Win HS and other premium hulls are rare...almost as rare as those that reload their own shells these days.
