Hello all, l am looking at starting to reload shotgun loads as some changes may be coming to our shotgun range requiring alternative shot types. Does anyone know of a book to purchase that may give me some info. Yes I said book I have looked online and have come out empty handed. As where is the best place to purchase a mec press. Thanks in advance.

What do you mean by alternative shot types?? Hopefully not steel is it

The Lyman Shotshell Reloading Handbook is the manual on the topic, in my opinion.

Reloading for shotguns has really fallen out of favour, so I think the best thing is to pick up a used press at gun shows, stores, auctions, etc, where they often seem to have trouble giving them away. They also appear on the EE, though the deals are rarely as tempting. But a single stage Mk 600 Jr can still often be found for $75, half of what you would buy one new for.

If I had to get one new I would look at Will Bilozir, or go to one of the online US reloading dealers.

Hodgdon data has shot she'll reloading.

I got both my 12g and 410 MEC presses direct form MEC.
I have seen MEC presses the odd time at wholesalesports

You can find them new much cheaper than Will. Hummason for one
We have to find out what he plans on reloading before we can suggest anything however. Sure doesn't sound like good old lead shot to me
Also been a while since you bought a new jr. Unfortunately they run like 220 now new plus taxes and shipping
Cheers

"Alternate shot" if that means bismuth is nosebleed expensive. Do some research and find some source for components before you go into it for a bunch of money. Sometimes finding anything is hard, wads and hulls for sub gauges the most difficult.

Just thinking that instead of going hundreds of dollars into supplies and hardware, if the range is mandating this a group buy of ammo might be cheaper. Then again i dont know the volume you shoot.

Unfortunately if this means no lead, even with reloading, the cost of your shooting hobby is about to rise substantially.

As mentioned the Lyman Shotshell reloading handbook is a great start. Watch the EE for a used press or new at humminsons

I use both the Lyman and the Ballistics Products manuals as well as the Hogdgon manual sometimes .
BPI has a vast array if steel data .

Have you found any steel wads for the 28 and 410???. Those I would love to run across. Also heard sam1 was making them for the 16ga but I cannot find any even state side
Cheers

Thanks for all the info. Yes I am talking steel shot. With lead reclamation coming down the pipe the small ranges will either close or pay the piper. I enjoy shooting too much to let that happen. I would rather plan ahead.

You are not going to reload steel for target shooting any cheaper than you can buy it especially if you are talking 12ga. There is almost zero source of componets in canada for steel and please guys don't say Will. He is ok if you fire a 1/2 dozen boxes a year but not for reloading high volumes
You also have to make sure if you use vintage guns they are even capable of firing steel without damage and plan also to shoot about 1/2 as much due to the increased costs
Me I would wait and see and keep shooting lead until forced
Cheers

I just checked LGS (Lebaron) and Xpert Game & Target Steel Shot Loads #7 are $2/box cheaper than Win AA factory loads. I bet it would cost double to reload them :)
