Hi Shot gun folks!
I've just recently decided I want to get into trap or skeet shooting (I've never done either) The only problem is my shotgun is a tactical beast with an 18.5" barrel. From what I've seen at the skeet ranges around Vancouver is you need a 21" barrel min. Does anyone know of anywhere that would rent a sporting shotgun so I can try the sport before investing into it?
Thanks alot everyone!

I shoot trap around here with my Benelli m4 all the time? I've even taking out the 12.5" norc a couple times and nobody has complained...

Are you sure about the 21" min rule? Seems pretty stupid....

Although trap and skeet ranges around here are fudd-central, I've never had one complain about using a ''tactical'' style shotgun. As long as you are safe and using approved ammo, who are they to say what you can use?

Given that the OP is located in Vancouver, this may be one point of reference.
I'm in the same position. My shotgun has wood furniture but the barrel is too short for their rules.

Many Trap and Skeet clubs are populated with what many would call "fudds". In fact, many that would be termed fudds are just dedicated to their shooting sport of choice. They aren't really fudds, they just know what works best for that particular game.
Imagine showing up to a trap club with your 18.5" tactical shotgun with red dot sights, rails, mods, etc. You'd get some funny looks.
Now, imagine showing up to a three-gun match and trying to do it with a Remington rolling-block or a high-end trap gun. You'd get some funny looks.
As Bollox said, nobody will likely complain if you try the game out with your tactical shotgun so long as you follow the rules closely and pay attention to safety.
A person can shoot trap and skeet with a tactical gun, but it won't be ideal. Just like you could (sort of) shoot IPSC with a cap-and-ball Colt. Or part of a three-gun match with a lever action.
If you show genuine interest, there may be individuals at the club that would loan you a firearm for a round or two. Some trap clubs have loaner guns that a person can borrow for the afternoon. Be repectful and polite and loads of people at a trap club will be willing to help you. I know this from experience as I have been helped (a lot) when I began trap shooting and now willingly help those who ask.

shooting trap or skeet with that short of a barrel will end up in fps loss and lead time loss, longer barrel helps in accuracy, swing and consistant shots, just pick up a mossburg 500 shotgun, there about $325 and all around universal gun, wont break, i have friends who have 15000 rounds through some of there toys

IF you show up at VGC with your gun, you might be "allowed" to shoot it, and you will most likely get the chance to shoot other guns before you spend the money. It has been a few years since I have shot there, but once I got the "new guy stink" off me, I found it to be a pretty fun club, with some pretty neat old farts. I met "Mean Gene Kiniski" there. Great stories.

You might want to inquire on whether you can get a formal lesson or two at the clubs in your area.

The instructor at my club let me borrow his Browning Cynergy for the lessons I took with him and does the same for other new newbies like me. In fact, he recommended that I don't be in a hurry to purchase a shotgun so that I can take the time to figure out what I prefer shooting.
