picked up a 20ga mossberg 500 with rifled barrel, what would be the best $200 scope for it, used for deer/bear and 100yds would be a very rare shot. can a rifle scope work on this?

I don't see why a normal riflescope wouldn't work. Maybe you could find a used 1.5-5 bushnell, otherwise browse the used scopes on the equipment exchange or try a Vortex.

About only issue, if you care, is parallax - so shotgun scopes often set to similar distance to rimfire / muzzle loader scopes - 50 or 60 yards. But recoil wise, I agree with Post #2 - any centerfire scope that would last on a moderate centerfire like 30-06, 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag should handle that shotgun without issue. Might look at what is out there for fixed 2.5 power - not sure if the Leupold Ultralights or whatever is the current incarnation, get down to that price range though. Is kind of topsy turvy - nobody wants fixed power scopes - much less moving parts, so should be easier / less expensive to make - but harder to find and often more expensive than variable power. For under $200, consider a used Weaver K3-1 or K2.5-1 - made in USA versions, not overseas. You are talking iron sight ranges for a 30/30 shooter, so you do not actually need much for magnification.

Rifle scopes will work. I have 2-7 Tasco on my 535 Mossberg. I put the scope to test slugs I was reloading. I was going to buy a better scope and put on it but never did. I usually set it on two or three power as the longest deer has been 90 yards. So far five deer have fallen with that gun. I haven’t experienced any problems with a rifle scope on a shoot gun.

If you can identify the Tasco model, some of them were as good as anything made in the world at the time - as good or better than Leupold, Redfield, etc. Top-of-the-line versions included Titan and World Class. Also multiple levels down from that, down to basic junk. Tasco would make whatever the wholesale buyer specified - $500 to $50 level quality. Most all that I know of, were made in Japan. Most definitely not all made equal though!!!!

Yep! My buddy had a Tasco World Class 3-9, the top of the line at that time, on a 358 Norma Magnum for more than 20 years. The rifle was a lightweight, built on a Springfield '03, and he put many tons of big game in the freezer using it. That scope never whimpered. Expect it would have been okay on a 12 GA.

For my tastes I'd go for a red/green dot scope on it. My freind let me use his 20 gage with a red dot scope on it for turkeys. I thought that was such a great idea, because shooting turkeys in the head causes a lot less dental problem at the diner table. f:P:2:
