What kind of shotgun scope should I use on a 870 cantilevered rifled barrel ?It will be used for deer only.

If your not looking for anything too fancy, Bushnell has a shotgun scope with 6" eye relief, I have looked through one and didn't mind it that much. Plus I think it runs at less than $100.

IMHO optics don't need to be perfect for sabots or slugs.

Cheers

disagree with Onagoth.
You need a decent quality optic to withstand the 12ga (you have either a 12ga or a 20ga if you thought about deerslayin).
Keep in mind a slug is consistent under 100 yards so no need of high magnification here. I use a Bushnell legend 2x7x32 just my 0.02$

I bought a Bushnell Trophy 3-12X56mm (30mm tube) for 300$ this summer and I mounted it on my Mossberg 500's cantilever barrel. I shot a spike buck yesterday with it. It was 4:15 PM and it began to be dark in the woods. Fortunately, the scope has a 56mm objective and a 30mm tube, giving very good brightness plus it has a illuminated dot reticle. It helps a lot in darkness. It's not a Leupold but for 300$ I think it's the best bang for the buck.

I put a bushnell holosight on my 870 cantilever rifled barrel. Shot a doe this year with it. The sight cost $300. Very fast sight aquisition, I am impressed, works great on the shotgun and withstands the recoil no problem.:)

I am also looking for a scope for the same purpose, but I now prefer either a Leopold or Burris as I have had no luck with Bushnell. My main criteria are long eye relief and durability. What do you guys consider the minimum eye relief considering the hard recoil that a sabot produces?

Nikon makes a scope just for shotguns;

SIR Cabelas has them.
But currently on my Mossberg 500 20ga ISB, I have a Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5x32 with Circle-X reticle

12 ga sabot slugs recoil isn't that bad (at least, not worst than a 300 win mag). My Bushnell Trophy 3-12X56mm has "only" 4.6 inches of eye relief and I find it just perfect.

While the Leupold VX III 1.5-5 is indeed a very nice scope.

The VX-I Shotgun scopes in either 1-4x or 2-7x will do very nicely on a cantilever, are parallax adjusted to 75 yards ... and are about 1/2 the cost of the VX III. Both have more than enough eye-relief for me. Not so sure I wouldn't look at the "Turkey-Plex" reticle as an option. For target acquisition, it's very fast .... might be a plus on deer that are on the move !

I use a Nikon 2x7x32 Prostaff. It is made for shotguns. I changed from the Bushnell 1.75-4 x30. Light transmission is WAY better than the Bushnell, and you can pick it up at Cabelas Canada.

Fixed power optics are substantially more rugged than variable power optics, for the most part. I'm sure you can get very expensive variable optics that would be of stronger construction than certain very cheap fixed optics, but as a general rule it works pretty well. It has to do with how lens elements achieve variable magnification.

If you are going budget, you might wish to go fixed power.
