Hi im fairly new to the sport of shooting. I recently purchased an 870 super mag, I've ran around a 1000 rounds of target load 7 and 1/2 through it. Currently has a modified choke. What do I need to do to shoot slugs with it? I realize I can buy a rifled barrel for rifled slugs, but what about normal slugs

Chalk, you can shoot regular rifled slugs through your shotgun as is. They are designed to be fired through any shotgun of the appropriate gauge. The rifling simply allows the slug to compress as it squeezes through the choke. Buy a couple boxes and have fun!
P.S. most people find they get best accuracy with rifled slugs through an IC choke, play around with different chokes and brands of slugs until you find what you like. Just dont go tighter than a full choke.

Note that the terminology can be confusing. "rifled" slug refers to ordinary slugs, not slugs for rifled barrels. If you got a rifled barrel, you would want to shoot sabot slugs. Every shotgun and brand of ammo is a little different, but you have a good chance of getting acceptable performance accuracy-wise with your modified choke and ordinary rifled slugs.

I use slugs with a smooth bore Remington regularly and they work just fine. I have found the best performance with more open chokes as well.

You can use rifled slugs with no problem through your gun.I have shot them through full
chocked shotguns many times they are hollow inside and compress as it moves down the barrel.

Darn, so much to think about. I recall just a few years ago someone telling me to never use a slug in a barrel other than a full choke. I think he said the slug could damage (e.g. crack) the barrel? I'd like to see more info on the subject.

You can always check out manufacturer reccommended uses for slugs. The Reminton sluggers I have specifically say they can be fired through any choke up to full but have the best performance through IC. Sabots through a rifled barrel have much better range and accuracy though.

Any suggestion for Brand and weight for a deer size target? What kind of range and accuracy should be expected? (12 Gage express, 28" smooth bore, Mod. choke).

Range and accuracy will be abysmal:redface:.
The only way for you to see that is to go buy a box of slugs and put up a target and shoot.
You can try @ 50 yards if you like but I suspect that if you use a 8.5x11 piece of paper for a target you will be able to use it for a long time- because it won't have many holes in it:D.
Not disparaging your shooting skills at all - but with a modified choke and bead sights and a undersize lead slug rattling down your barrel range and accuracy will most likely be limited to around 20-30 yards at most to kill(note I said Kill not WOUND) a deer

Seriously, if you are planning to hunt deer a rifled slug barrel is well worth the money- it will shrink your group at a hundred yards from several feet with your current setup to several inches.

i have owned a rem 870 magnum express 23/4 31/2 inch i found it shot best with a full choke now remember each gun shots different some guns cant shot sluges with a dam.i own a winchester auto loader and it will only shoot buck shot it throws sluges every wear

I have a rifled barrel and scope on my shot gun
I can get some pretty nice groups at 100 yards, I can shot confidently at 150, I use the federal fusion slugs, they're fast, and have some slight bad assness to them. But my deer spots are all pretty thick bush, so I rarely have more than about 50 yards of clear shooting lane.
