Shotgun Type vs Scores

I don't spend more cash to get a prettier clays gun, mine are the lowest grade of trim available. I do spend more to get a higher quality clays gun.
I hear you and that's what I do when purchasing a new gun but mostly I buy used ones so maybe I'm a bit more of an opportunist, when I find something I want it may be blingy or plain.

When I consider the cost of targets, shells, club memberships, lessons, gas to drive to the range and the retained value of even a hard used target gun the cost of a high end gun can be the least of your costs.
No kidding. I just dropped 1000.00 in entry fees and 1000.00 in ammo for the shoot in Kamloops starting today. It costs me between 2 and 3 dollars a target to shoot in competition when I factor in my travel costs.

Fit is the answer. My son had a guy ticked off because he out shot him and his P gun shooting a mossberg 930. Fun to see.

Fit is a big part of it but I suspect your son is probably quite a bit younger than the P gun guy so reflexes, eyesight, reaction time and physical strength all play a part. The mental aspect also plays a big part, most young guys have no worries in the world but most older guys have a lot going on and subconsciously it can affect performance.
The crappy thing is that as you age all of these attributes that allow us to do better get weaker so it really wouldn't matter what kind of gun the older gentleman is shooting, his skills are deteriorating, it just happens that he has the means to afford a nice gun and so others make fun of him for it. Decades previous he might have been the young guy out shooting the older guy with a nice gun.
Young guys just love pushing older guys out of their way, it's all part of how strength and youth push the human race forward, it's just life and we see it in many aspects of society not just shooting.

An awful lot of the older guys with nice guns have them because they know that a Krieghoff, Kolar, DT-11, or Perazzi will outlast them!! When you get hooked enough to spend the money on a big dollar gun it's probably because you shoot a lot! Shooting a lot will mean you want something reliable that will last for thousands of rounds with minimal breakage (in some cases hundreds of thousands). Many (not all) of the lower priced guns will need several replacements over the course of a shooting career so some people bite the bullet and buy once, cry once. The high end guns also tend to hold value pretty well. In my case, if a young guy beats me with an 870 (or anything else for that matter) it doesn't bother me a bit!!! I didn't buy my guns to impress anyone other than myself and as I get older, it's not much of an accomplishment to outshoot me !!!.

Yah! It sucks!! lol

New guy here. Based on what I'm reading, should I grab an O/U under $1K or save up for a Beretta?
The sub $1k O/U shotguns have been very hit or miss as far as long term reliability . If you want to save money, go with a gas operated semi auto, if you really want an O/U, Browning and Beretta are equally reliable, and are pretty much opposites fit wise. In other words, if a Browning fits you, a Beretta likely won't, and fit should be a priority for a shotgun.

Others say It’s the Nut behind the Butt.

It's a regular progression I believe. We start with our old beaters, start shooting more often, then try one or two of the shotgun games and fall in love ! Naturally, we need prettier guns, then better, and even more prettier guns...all the way to HOLLEE FOOK...you paid HOW MUCH for that beauty...LOL

"On any given day, the best shooter can be beat". One of my shooting buddies used to say that all the time, and we've witnessed it (RIP Brian McLeod)

In 2019, at the Canadian Nationals Sporting Clays in Fredericton NB. We watched Vernon Turiff humble a LOT of F3..Kolar. Perazzi and Kreighoff shooters with his Browning BPS 12 ga !!! His hands operate about the same speed as the bolt in my SX3 Sporting...lmao What an amazing shooter he is !

My squad mate always says..." it ain't the gun, it's the nut on the back of the stock" ;) Still holds true in soooo many instances !
