I took my Remington 870 with 28" barrel with me coyote hunting the other day. Took one on my first stand at 30 yards with 3" 00 buckshot. Now I'm hooked! Now I'm in the market for a new shotgun dedicated to hunting Yotes. Any ideas on the best setup? What are some of you guys using?

There is such a thing as Dead Coyote shotgun loads from American shotshell manufacturers. IIRC something like F shot is used with buffering. (size .20 calibre?) Internet rumours say it's often a more effective killer than traditional non-premium #4 buckshot. I'm thinking this Dead Coyote load and an extra an full choke, deserves some attention. Barring that, second choice, copper plated magnum BB, third choice, premium #4 buckshot.

Old lead BB shot works good too.

My dad gave me 4 boxes of Remington BB nitro mag (lead shot) that he can't use for geese anymore. I shot one coyote with it so far at 45 yards when he was on a full out run. He went ass over tea kettle faster than I could reload. I was pretty impressed.

Unless you live in the fascist province of BC where they say you need to use no.1 buck or larger...
I use my BPS with a Carson's dead coyote choke tube and 3" 00buck

I Can't find #4 buckshot anywhere! I would like to test it out, though I'm really happy with the patterns I'm getting with 00 buck and modified choke. 9 of 12 are hitting a coyote out to 50 yards. One thing I was wondering is if shortening the barrel would have much of an effect on my patterns. I'm picking up a sure shot camo stock for the 870 and I would like to get a shorter barrel with rifled open sites. I think this would be ideal for calling Yotes, what do you think?

I am a big fan of the 870 due to it's barrel and accessory options. If you can find a shorter barrel with rifle sights that is threaded for chokes, i don't think the length difference will affect your patters much.
On the other hand, for a dedicated yote gun the savage model 24 predator may be something for you to consider. .223 rifle over 12g 3" with screw in chokes is a dog's nightmare. They are on the heavy side but not an issue for stand hunting. Great for those dogs that hang up out of shotgun range.
The model 24 is not currently in production so you would have to watch for a used one. Savage will release a new version soon called the model 42 that will hopefully be available in a predator version as well. It's certainly a blast taking a yote up close, so have fun shopping and keep up the good work.

The longer barrel is the better option as it helps your swing. The rifle sights will actually slow you down and hinder you more than anything else when shooting at moving targets/animals. I prefer a front bead only. A fluorescent bead replacement or a red-dot optic might be worth considering for the stationary shots but again I feel they are distracting on moving shots. When shotgunning you should focus on the target anyway.

Al Simmons, Hamilton, if you cant find it elsewhere from a sponsor, carries it. Not cheap. 00 buck is cheap, and sounds like your best bet. Rifled open sites is my fav. but the .223 gives me a better range. Lots of ammo to choose from, all the way up to TAP ammo (for the big guy ;) )
