I have a shotgun project in mind for this spring that involves turning an old single shot 12 g into an all purpose bird, bear, deer, survival gun. I would like to have some sort of all purpose sights on it.

Any suggestions?R:d:

How about a red dot? Have a nice field of view, doesn't block the view and can be used for anything. The only downside is that the battery can die. But when that happens, you just point it and shoot the old fashioned way :)

A plain bead is all you need. Buying sights and having a gunsmith install them is going to cost you more than the gun is worth. But if you really want to do it find some used Remington sights that came off a rifle...they are probably the toughest open sights found on production guns today.

Go iron sights. For all the things you want to use it for you won't need a scope for the ranges you are likely going to engage your quarry at. For bear you are going to be over bait so distance won't be an issue, birds are going to be shot at mainly 40 yrds or less. Deer might be the toughest one to account for but there are a lot of variables anyways/

Off topic though, would you have a threaded barrel so you can put different chokes in? That would make your SG more versatile for all your applications based on the choke. Just a thought, good luck.

I have ordered a threaded addapter for choke tubes from Brownells and intend to cut the barrel and install the choke tube to a finished lenght of 20". Been looking at some ideas on the net and was just wondering if anyone here had tried some of them. One that interested me is a peep rear peep sight with a hooded front sight.
