Shotguns, Birds & Bird Dog Pics Thread

How about we do a thread based on the theme of Shotguns, Birds & Bird dogs? So long as one or all of the three title items are in the pics lets see em :) In all honesty anything related to Shoguns and game taken with them or the pursuit of game or clay target sports is fair game :) I searched the hunting forum and found lots of big game photos, but in all honesty the hunting forum can get a bit slow so I thought we'd try it here. Maybe get more participation by targeting the group most afflicted by the sickness :d

Only rules is hopefully include a bit of info, no attacking the action type, quality of shotgun or class of dog. You'll see why as I add photos, and upload more to photo bucket whenever it decides to be useful.

First up is i believe a Ruffie and a blue but maybe a pair of Ruffies and my trusty 20ga Wingmaster. First shotgun I ever bought.


Next a trio of Ruffies I killed on, believe it or not, a Sept 20 morning.


And the Ugly stick used to kill said trio and the "Bird Dog" that flushed and retrieved them.


This was a good day. I killed a Ruffed, a Blue and a Spruce grouse on the same morning.

Hopefully we can tap into the great uplands, forests, marshes, lakes, rivers, bays etc of this great country and see some shotguns, dogs, men and birds in action. Winter is dragging on and I'm almost through "Big December Canvasbacks" and waiting on the amazon man to refill the bookshelf.
 

I think this one ticks all the boxes. Wet dog, Ptarmigan, and a scattergun.

One of the last father son day these guys got to share on the barrens. It was a good day. The old fella has been gone two years now. I still miss him.

sspike that's a great looking setter you've got! Looks like a good day of Ptarmagin hunting as well congrats.

Jay, Nos looks like he's quite the accomplished hunter. They're great versatile dogs aren't they. Always love their beards :)

Ninepointer seems to have the woodcock dialed in! Great work I've always wanted to head east and hunt a few woodcock. Such a unique bird. Is your Lab a pointer or flusher? Definitely happy either way.

Congrats to Cory and Townes on the first season together. Looks like a good start. Hope you guys have many great days afield together.

Love seeing those old Brittany's hunter 5425! First bird dog I ever hunted over was a Britt and they'll always hold a special place for me.

Gunsaholic looks like you and your dad had a proper diver hunt that day. Nice memories Ill bet. Old bird dogs don't know how to quit and neither do old bird men I suppose.

A good day at camp on a solo weekend. Just Rigby and I. He was really on his game that day. I had just bought the new to me Ithaca 37 in 20g. and left my trusty sxs at home that weekend.

Sspike I just noticed you added a couple father and son pics to your post. Another memorable day for sure. Looks like father honouring son in the last picture. What a fitting way for the senior dog to pass the torch. Thanks for sharing with us.

Yeah i put a couple of other photos in. A skinny wet bird dog is not much to look at. For father and son, they were far different dogs. The elder was a far more hard headed big running trial type dog and the junior is far more close workimg cover dog type. Like his mothers side.
 
Excellent photos. Had one English Setter years ago and with virtually no training (three kids and mortgage, we can all relate) Max would hold his point endlessly. What a great grouse dog. Just picked up a Gordon Setter at Xmas (Lucy is 13 months old now) and having no experience with this breed, it has been very interesting so far. Many differences compared to the English Setter. My last hunting partner was a Brittany and we had some serious adventures. I know there are places I would never have gone if it had not been for Harley. I will get some photos together and post them up.

The short answer is, close to home here in NL but the lines are are imports from some American kennels. fellows that are far better informed than I did the planning and breeding on those dogs. I was lucky enough to happen upon a pup that could pretty much train himself. he was a great first bird dog. the junior dog came from the same breeder.
I love the setters but I'm thinking I may look for a GSP for my next dog. the setters are a nightmare for shedding, and they live in the house.
