Shotguns, Birds & Bird Dog Pics Thread

Well that's even more impressive! I'd have guessed maybe a layout boat like a momarsh or something, but not a 17ft Jon. Very nicely done.

Here is a better look at the blind,

On the trailer, it all folds up for travel.

You pull 2 pins on the scissors and it all folds in out of sight. A couple of bungie cords to hold it down and you would never know there was a blind on the boat.

This was one of those duck hunts that, despite the best laid plans, doesn't go your way. My buddy (who's dog is in the pics) calls and says he watched about 50 mallards and 20 or so teal on a little grassland slough we call the "teal pond". So we set the plan in motion for the next morning, our other friend declines to come because his wife is due anytime. 4:30am and we're loaded and gone.

About the time I get the dekes set, and buddy finishes brushing in.

We both get a text "It's Happening!"................................."Birds coming in yet?"
Ha ha ha it was killin him, figured he was missing the flight of the century, bird straps strained from limits of fat northerns.

But he needn't fear. As sometimes happens, regardless of scouting, timing, prep and anticipation. Five mallards flew in just after LST and only one decoyed, which I had to shoot, because labs can't go home without getting muddy.

Great day regardless, and we were able to make it home for lunch then down to the hospital to see our buddies first born son

Thats pretty slick, I figured you wouldn't be cruising the highway with the blind up as you'd be forever re brushing it :) Thanks for sharing now I got another project rolling around in my head ha ha

Oct 2016. Vermont pheasant preserve. Toby left(11 years old),Sage right(6 years old). Couple more resting at home.
Both have made the long pickup truck drive with me to Saskatchewan and Montana, but "we" have slowed down the last couple of seasons.IMG_2903.JPGIMG_0009.jpgIMG_0014 (1).jpg

Another old picture from 1988 on a trip to Montana long before the paperwork circus it is now. I'm hunting with Raider and he's pointing dead which he did quite a bit as he hated busting birds, even wounded ones. The shotgun is a Beretta A303 I still have that replaced my A301 that was stolen with all my other guns the year before.

Yes, the prairies were much loved by the Setters and "Dad". Weather killed off most of the Huns and Sharptails in SE Sask.......Have not made the trip for a few years.....Looking for new ideas for another trip "somewhere". Couple more photos of Toby on the prairies and wife Sharron with Montana Roosters.

Yep winter has been hard on the native upland plus for sharptails the loss of breeding habitat has had an effect. I have know a few huntable coveys but I only hunt each covey once a year to leave most behind to hopefully increase the numbers. The southeast got hit harder again this year for snowfall so the pheasant numbers will most likely be down as well. I may be heading west more this year and hunt areas I haven't been to for a couple of decades. I first hunted the west with Buck who was tougher than nails and the only one man Brit I've ever seen.

PeteG thanks for sharing the photos. I Love those hightail points, great stuff. Sorry to hear of decline in bird numbers, some winters while working on the prairies I wondered how anything could survive that cold & wind. I've always wanted to do some travelling wingshooting, some of the western states look ripe for adventure. The desert quail, means and scaled, are certainly on my bucket list. As are woodcock in central/eastern Canada, but Im sure you're into them most falls.

Hunter5425 I'll bet you've got a lifetime of great photo memories of bird dog companions past and present. I'm sure I'm not the only one who appreciates seeing all you've shared. I wish I could share a picture of a friends long past Britt Cleo she was the dog who transformed a boyhood full of daydreams about upland wingshooting and cemented them into reality. Never let up even at the end.

While I'm not sure, as I haven't kept a record, but I'd wager this is the biggest Blue grouse I've ever shot. I killed him on a favourite hill close to a popular hunting area that for some reason always seems to be overlooked by others. Used my Franchi Alcione on this one. Wish I would've taken some better pictures on this day.

You guys, stop posting adorable pictures of your puppies :)
I've been without my golden for two years, and have a yearning for another retriever or duck troller!
Great posts, keep it up!
