Does anyone have any advice on what is a good .12 g shotgun for a left handed shooter?

I'm currently looking at the Browning BPS and the Ithaca M37. Also, any ideas on where you can buy the Ithaca M37 in Southern Ontario?

Thanks.

Just a bit of unsolicted advice...
This is the hunting forum mostly for rifles. You should post your question in the hunting shotgun forum. I know they have pretty similar names...

Maybe a nice moderator will move it for you.

yea, i got some advice for left handed shooters- rifle shotgun, 22 whatever- QUIT CLIMBING ON THE STOCK- put your cheek BACK on the cheekpiece where it belongs , and you'll find that you can use a RIGHT HANDED GUN just fine-just ignore that shell going past - i'm left eye left hand dominant and i don't have ONE left handed gun in my stable- and i've been at this 42 YEARS

that, in no way should be taken as a PERSONAL attack- those of us who've been around a while see this and related left handed questions more times than we can count inside of a week, and it APPLIES TO EVERYBODY- the ONLY gun that gives a lefty trouble is the bolt, - the rest of these so-called problems come from POOR SHOOTING POSITION- take a look at any gun, put your cheek on the cheekrest, and see where the EJECTION PORT is; it's away up there at least a good 2-3 inches in front of your nose- now put your nose on your wrist- see how much CLOSER and uncomfortable it is?- folks that do this also move the scope forward to compensate for being too close to the eyepiece

I'm a leftie and never had an issue with shotguns of any style(except bolts). Keep your eye on your target and you will not see the empties at all. That being said, tang safeties are more leftie friendly than trigger guard safties. Fit is the most important the rest is just a question of adapting to your leftie needs, that, we are very used to.

Lefty here too. My favorite shot gun is a 12 ga. SxS. Pull both barrels at the same time is a real kick in the arse...:D

Depending on the stock a double or o/u is a great choice, though spends. If they've got much cast for a rightie they won't come up properly for a lefty. Most pumps will be ok although the safeties may be wrong sided for you. I have a 37 and love it but the safety may not work for you. Given the nature of shotgunning I would recommend handling any prospective purchase to ensure that it mounts properly. Shooting the gun, or the same model loaned to you by a helpful CGNer at least, is the best way to ensure that you get a gun that fits you right.

In shotgunning fit is very important. I am right handed left eye dominant. My sporting gun has ajdustable comb, I figure it is worth 3-5 targets a day and sometimes that is what it takes

Stevens makes a budget copy of the Ithaca M37 if cost is an issue.
SFRC, link bottom right of the top banner, has them on sale for ~200

For all the shooters who think left handed shooters (left eye, left handed or right handed or whatever) simply need to simply suck it up or learn a better technique, you've obviously never tried a firearm fitted to your proper-hand.. because if you did you wouldn't be giving such ridiculous advice.

When you mention Ithica Model 37, are you talking about the old model or todays Model 37? There are many old model 37's around for sale, however very few carry the new model 37. Prophet River Firearms in Lloydminister, Alberta has the new model 37 for sale. There are many choices out there for left-hand shooters besides the pump shotgun. (ie: Semi-auto, over and under, side by side).

and forty two YEARS of experience counts for NOTHING?-
I HAVE, and unless it's a bolt, a lh posesses no advantages for me- and more than 1 lh- remmy 1100, an MIRROR mauser( go look that up if you don't know what it is- it is NOT a 98- ) and a randall- all of which were SPECIAL ORDERED from the factory ( which you could do in those days)-and a few others including 22s that i've run into along the way- the 1100 not only has the left handed ejection, but the STOCK itself has a left cheekpiece and left handed cant- same deal with the mauser- and those had to be CUSTOM FITTED - the randal, being a pistol, was merely an mirror image with neutral grips, no thumbrest or other precision gee-gaws- i also had an 870 in right hand, and all of that was VERY expensive at the time-it was the 870 that "showed me the way" it grouped better than my 1100 custom and further to the right- that CAUSED me to RE-THINK my whole left handed strategy

Well you said it all :"I HAVE, and unless it's a bolt, a lh posesses no advantages for me". T-Star, Just because YOU haven't found an advantage for owning a LH firearm doesn't mean that the next person won't.

Regardless of your 42 years of experience, I'm sure the combined years of experience of all the left handed shooters that HAVE found an advantage owning a LH firearm exceeds your 42. Sorry to hurt your ego, but if anything, years of experiene doesn't always equal expertise

At the very least, the safety advantages alone of a LH firearm for a LH shooter are worth consdering and trying one out. Have you ever shot a semi, say a 10/22, that the round malfunctioned and blew into your face? I have, and it's not pleasant. Had I not been wearing my safety glasses I would have lost an eye if not both. Wouldn't have happened if the 10/22 came in a lefty. What if it were a .308 semi? The path of least resistance is in your face should that round malfuntion. Not my ideal situation so I choose to buy lefties, if possible, and all LH shooters should, at the very least, consider this issue when buying their firearms.

Now, perhaps you're like a lot of ol' timers or "real men" that don't wear hearing protection and don't consider the fact that a firearm or that ammunition can malfuction, but I choose otherwise.

Best of luck to you.

I tell those mental-midgets to try my gun out... It's absolutely hilarious seeing them trying to manipulate my southpaw guns... Eventually, the lightbulb goes on over the top of their heads...

hey, i wear hearing protection , and have had a HEAD SEPARATION in an m14- so i've been where you've been- and the REASON my face is INTACT is b/c i was BACK ON THE CHEEKPIECE WHERE I SHOULD BE, not climbing the stock; sorry, but your arugument is INVALID

Why a lh would settle for a rh gun is beyond me. There are many choices out there and obviously there are advanatges to using a left hand gun if your left handed. Not to many rh would chose a lh...although they should seriously consider it as according to some there is no difference in safety or functionality  Go with a BPS as I absolutely love mine. Oh BTW I was oiginally rh and right eye dominate and fired tens of thousands of rounds rh but lost my right eye in an accident and now only use lefties.
