Getting into shotgun loading , is anyone loading there own steel shells for waterfowl , or just using factory. was thinking about loading my own other then trying to find the proper components and i need to get my hands on a steel shot load manual. Any tips or advice!? i know it may be a hassle to load steel shot but i would enjoy it as a hobby. Also any tips on suppliers for components. I’ve been on bilozir fine guns website for a day they seem to have a good selection of stuff. Ive got some hulls and wads and to start with a cheap target load, then eventually work into some hunting loads

Thanks Tyson

They are not a site sponsor, but have read many good things about them in various sub forums here on CGN.
How much you planning on reloading fr hunting purposes?
100, 500 rounds per season or you going to toss in some custom trap/skeet/five stand play?
Lots of variables and choices to be had and made.
I just ran 95 rounds of 22 hornet through the various stages the last couple of days and just cleaning up the powder charge bullet seating operation.
Now to find a range day to determine the success or reinvent the choices I made;)

I started becoming interested in shotgun reloading lately. The biggest issue I’m finding is that there is a shortage of components and all shotgun loads are dependent on matching up a Hull, powder, wad and shot load in order to reload a safe decent performing load. Another major issue is that hulls seem to be changing quite a bit with some manufacturers farming out their hull production so it’s hard to identify exactly what it is you have on hand to reload. A friend of mine highly recommended the Lyman shotgun reloading manual. It shows cut always of many of the more popular hulls out there. Couple more links to some useful info

Morning , You kinda hit the nail on the head there , probably around 500 steel/hevi rounds , and 500 or more target loads per season. Will def will doing some skeet/trap play , along with a few duck and geese hunts. i loaded up a few .243 on our rainy saturday 70 grain noslers also gave my bench a shoe shine.

i’ve was online a good junk of saturday afternoon just checking out load details and manuals, pretty cool how it all works. I then searched fairly hard for wads/hills/ shot/ filler wads, your right not easy stuff to just find online may have to contact some places, Right now i have some Waa12 wads i found some target loads i can prob do up for them, i have some once shot hulld to test some loads and my press with , then i will have to do some shopping or ordering from someone

I used to reload my own shotgun shells with steel BB, was fun but I wasnt really saving any money at the end of the day to be honest. Did it more as an excuse to have some quiet time in the shop after a long day at work.

Will be satisfying if i can actually get some good steel loads made up and hunt with them! I did order the status of steel reloading manual last night, and also ordered a some wads and hulls. Looks like from research, the most popular in canada for steel load wads are either from Bpi ( ballistic products inc) or Rsi (reloading specialties inc) The status of steel is a book is a bpi book. So will read through it and go from there

Update maybe keep this post going lol ,i was able to score a couple lbs of Alliant steel powder , Found a load in my status of steel manual to test out, it’s 3” cheddite hull 209 cheddite primer , Lbc43 wad ,43 grains steel powder and a BB shot. I’ve read the 43 grains is heavy but it’s a 1605 fps load

Also have some AA older compression type hulls ordered to load for target coming this week, Right now have some waa12 wads and winchester super handicap powder 7.5 shot running them into some Universal winchester AA hulls with cheddite primers , i’m loading for my first test round they seem to be loading well with the waa12 wad and 11/8 load , once i get onto the aa i may change to a 1 ounce load 7.5 shot will just need a different wad waa12sl i believe i’ve read

Cheers

Reloading is such an addiction. Started off years back reloading for handguns and trap/ skeet loads. Components, powder etc were cheaper and available pre covid, but not anymore. I reload Bismuth for duck/geese, certainly not cheaper then factory loads if you can find them when required but way more effective then steel, both pattern and performance out to 50 yards.
