Shotshell - loose primer pockets

I got a bunch of Clever Mirage Target 12 ga. hulls and tried reloading one hull. Everything went well until the final crimp stage where the force of the final crimping popped out the primer. Tried three more hulls and all the new CCI 209M primers were loose in the pockets.

1. Are other brands/types of primers larger in diameter?

2. Is there a way to keep the primer in place, for example, is there a glue that will work? Is glueing even advisable?
 
It's probably not the Primer but the Hull. Never heard of a "Clever Mirage Target" Hull. Are they a Chedite Hull?
 
And one more thought... A big NO to glue in the primer pocket. Try another Hull.
 
Sounds like your hull is too ful before crimping. Top of the shot should be at least 1/2" below the mouth of the case, if not more. Are you following load data ie powder amount wad manufacturer and model? The crimp should not be putting any pressure on the shot/wad simply holding them in place. How does the primer feel when seating?
 
Could be too much powder for the wad you are using too so when it goes to crimp it's physically pushing the wad further into the hull.. More probable is the fact that you're using a hull I've never heard of and therefore it must be bad!
 
the Clever hulls were probably primed originally with Cheddite or possibly Fiocchi primers. I know for sure that the Cheddite's are very slightly larger in diameter than other 209's. The Fiocchi primers are a bit larger too if I remember correctly. There are two solutions if you want to continue to use those hulls.
1. use a primer pocket peener as sold by Ballistic products. It is like a punch inserted in to the empty deprimed hull. One whack with a hammer and the pocket should hold your CCI primers.
2. Switch to Cheddite primers.

The Clever hulls actually crimp well and takes my wads and homecast 00Buck. For now and until I can fiddle with a punch or find Cheddite primers, I will just set aside these Clever hulls and load the Remington Gun Club hulls I picked up at the same time. No problem with these Remingtons so far.
 
hello, I think u might have been the gent at the poco range picking up those hulls at the trap range... post some of what ur doing for the buckshot!!

Those red clever hulls are Italian, I believe metric someone had said, Im not entirely sure. they are good looking hulls, but the data is not realy out there.
 
McKutsky, I was at the PoCo trap range around three pm last Sunday. Were you one of the trapshooters who helped me gather hulls? If so, thanks again. Or the guy who came as I was leaving and to whom I passed the box of hulls?

Here's what I've done so far. BTW, I just dismantled the Clever hull reloads.

Picture shows reloaded Remington shotshells, home cast 00 Buck, primers and the wads.

1. Hulls are Remington Gun Club
2. Wads are Pacific by Hornady "Green", based on the label on the plastic bag. Don't know anything more as I got these in the "cheapie" bin at a GS in the US.
3. Shot - 9 balls 00 Buck cast from SkiesUnlimited 20-cavity mold.
4. Used a Lee LoadAllII. Buckshot was hand counted and dropped.
5. Got the following data from Federal reload info:

Shot Weight - 1 1⁄4 oz
Veloclity - 1220 fps
Primer - 209A
Wad - 12S4
Powder - 800-X
Powder charge - 24 grains
Pressure - 10,100 psi

Nine pieces 00 Buck weighed 450 grains which is equivalent to 1.029 oz, way less than 1 1/4 oz. Therefore I assumed that pressure will be much lower than 10,100 psi and quite safe. Hope to test these Friday or the weekend.
 
oh ya thats was me, the young guy, with the mossberg at the last game. :)
where did u get the mold from? I may have to see abouts to get some buck done up for me... looks good let us know how she rolls.
