Shotshell slug reloading and shot cards?

Hey all
Need some help. I'm a little lost with shotgun reloading.
I'm using lee slugs and following the data lee has to the letter ;all same components) but my shells aren't crimping right. The slug sits too low in the wad so the crimp bells in, a lot. I've put some cardboard spacers in the shell and it fixed the issue.
My real query is where should put the fuller? After the powder, under the slug in the shot cup, or over the slug directly under the crimp?

I would think the filler should be under the slug in the shot cup, unless your shot cup/wad is sitting low in the case which it shouldn't be if you are following the directions correctly.

Thanks for some help!
using Win AA, HS6, 1oz slug, a claybuster copy of Win12f114 (though it seems exactly the same as a Win12 wad)
Following the same recipe as the pamphlet.

the WAA12f114 is a 1-1/4 wad ( holds a 1-1/4 to 1-3/8 of shot ) yellow,
is the clay buster copy yellow?

the WAA12 wad (white) holds 1-1/8 of shot and is different

I have been told the Old Win AA hulls are different from the New AA hulls
I have not cut one apart side by side to compare
it could be your problem old / new hulls

In the shotcup under the slug. I'd use a 1oz wad it will prolly fix your crimp.
I use sts hulls 36gr of hs6 claybuster grey wad and a 7/8oz lee slug it works great. I've loaded 1oz slugs in the sts hulls using the pink 1oz claybuster wads it worked perfect for crimp but I can't remember the exact charge of hs6. It was either slightly higher or lower the 36gr

That's why recipes are published, if you stick with the EXACT recipe, everything should fit right and should crimp perfectly, if the recipe doesn't fit, throw it out!! You must use the exact hull, wad, powder charge, slug or shot charge that is recommended, or fit will suffer.

The new HS AA hulls are a different design but it has no effect on reloading the 12ga vs the old compression formed AA. Both use the same wads, data, etc. 28 and 410 HS are a different story.

well tested my loads today. As Hungry would say, my #### didn't fall off.
The loads are a little heavier then I'd like though.

to make a reduced recoil load, would i just reduce the powder charge?
Should I find a new type of Wad if I drop my powder volume?

I phoned up Lyman customer service when I started looking into loading shotshells. So far I primarily load slugs and a little buckshot.I have an older and the new copy of the Lyman shotshell reloading book, and could find nothing about reducing loads. The customer svc rep there said that it was safe to reduce by 5% (keeping all components the same).
The lee pamphlet that came with my 1 oz. mold states that if you change or substitute components, to reduce by 10%.Clear as mud?Me too.I use 5% reduced with Win. AA hulls, Lyman Sabot slug, WAA12R wad, SR 4756 powder, Win. 209 primer. No issues.A little milder recoil.

here is the lee slug data: w ww.leeprecision.com/cgi-data/instruct/SM%203529.pdf

I use a variation of the load at the bottom of the list:
1 oz slug
Remington gun club hull
CCI 209 primer
WAA12SL wad
and tried between 32.4 and 35 gr of HS6 (where 32.4 gr is reducing the recommended load of 36gr by 10%, then worked up)

the load works great in my 870 (18" smooth bore barrel) and is reasonably accurate (slugs touching at 25 yards, with a red dot)

I know people say dont substitute and use only published data, but I have read a few books and compared data between the CCI and WIN 209 primer and the pressure is generally very similar when all other components are the same.

The gun club hull is one piece and very similar to the high end remington hulls. Lots of reloaders use them and I have seen them interchanged with premier and nitro hulls in some manuals.

They come out pretty good using the load all 2, great crimp!

You could use a lower powered powder for reduced loads,
but keep in mind slugs are heavy and must have a little
stink behind them or they wont be very accurate at
a reasonable distance.
(Or install an elevator sight on your shotgun.)

I loaded in the past hundreds of 7/8 Lyman slugs in AA hulls
and used the white wads.
Yellow if i recall was a little too short for that slug unless you cranked up the powder charge.
Its a ballancing act for all the components to fill the hull
with the same volume to get propper crimp.
You might have to experiment a bit.
