what is a good 12 gauge shotshell for recreetional shooting???
i tried the winchester target 23/4 and did not liked them....but then again a am soooo newb (first day of shooting!!!)

Some guys shoot federal gun clubs, some the cheapmWinchester, others the Kent.
kent seems to burn dirty from what I can tell.
Try to get some marked 2 3/4 drams equiv.,# 8 shot 1/ 1/8oz
or #8 1oz.
It won'tr be so hard o your shoulder

I normally handload, but if you go to walmart, they sometimes have pretty inexpensive ammo for sale.

Recreational shooting? If you mean clay shooting then 2 3/4" 7.5 or 8 shot is perfect. If it is hurting your shoulder too much ("did not liked them") you could possibly start lower on the hurt scale. Something like a 20 gauge may fit you better. If it's not the kick of the gun that you don't like and it's the pattern and the number of times you hit your target...... you pretty much can't get anything better. You will just have to practice more. The first time most people go out they usually don't hit the majority.

If I am assuming completely wrong forgive me.

i am shooting a remington 870 express whit a 18,5 inch cyl barrel (i know it is not the best for clay!!) i shot 75 shells and my friend shot the same, i did not hit one in the first 50 shots then it came down to 3 on 5 and the last 2 times i hit 4 on 5.
i whent and bought a 30 inch whit mod choke on my way home;)

i dont mind the kick or the bruises, all i did not like was the shells jamming in the breach (1 out ou 15 aprox) and the patern but like i sayd ...i am a super newb wanting knowledge from superior minds! :)
in fact i will take ANY pieces of advice i can get...

sorry for the misspelling (i am french) , yess a love bananas:D
so can you give me advise???????

You may like bannas, but my good friend win 64 has a thing about them especially when they are dancing:dancingbanana:

The gun you are shooting clays with is not the ideal gun, but it should work fine for most of your shots on clay. Unless you are shooting F.I.T.A.S.C. or handicap trap the choke you are using coupled with the cheapest promotional loads are capable of hitting as many as you miss. Because you are a confessed newbie I suspect that you have little or no experience with pointing a shot gun or proper move mount and shoot. I would suggest that you go to a club and hook up with other recreational shooters and get some basic instruction. Have fun for now, but if you want to be really good, look for a competant instructor. As far as the ammo, any target loads will work fine for informal recreation shooting. If you are ever in the southern Alberta area send me a PM and I will point you in the direction where you may have some fun and more instruction.

In my 870 the cheap Federal and Winchester target loads you can buy at Walmart and Canadian Tire would jam constantly. I bought a case of Remington "Gun Club" 2 3/4 7.5s and not one jam. My local gun shop sells the Gun Clubs for $56 for a case of 250 which makes it even nicer.

You have two things working against you.

Is your 870 new or used?

The Winchester bulk 12G from walmart does jam in some guns, my Baikal hates them and my Norinco (870 clone with 870 bbl) also doesn't like them.

The 870 express bbl do sometimes jam with all ammo, so try dsome different ammo and if you are still getting jams, see a gunsmith ( a good one)

For me, I switched to C-tire's Federal bulk pack with no issues. Now you being in Laval, have a little more selection, with LeBaron and maybe someday Cabela's. If you can find it, try Remington Gun Club and a few other target loads.

Now if you want bigger pellets you may have to go with better ammo, I know Winchester bulk pack does come in different sizes but not sure about the Federal and Gun Club.

Good luck.

The cheap Winchesters are the worst for jamming as you noted. The cheap metal they use on the base expands too much I think. My 70's vintage 870TB clears them out but its a smoother gun than an express (your chamber might be a little rough if its like other Expresses I've seen). Plus, the Winchesters are really, really dirty.

I've had the best luck with Rem Gun Clubs too. Some people say the primers are too hard on them but I shot about 4000 last year and every single one went bang.

I like gun club #8's 1 oz shot for the 16 yard line shooting trap. 1-1/8 oz OK too but a little more recoil. Prefer #7-1/2 1-1/8 oz shot for handicap and windy/cold days.
