Yep thats me.
Never fired one shell from any shotgun ever.
That's going to change real soon.
I'm thinking of buying a tactical style 12 gauge but I don't know SFA about shotguns. I like the look and the price of the maverick 88 or the mossberg 500. I'm told they are pretty much the same thing. Anyone have one of these? What's a good barrel length? 18.5" ? Can I use this for the odd backyard skeet shoot? What accessories should I be looking at? I realise that I'm probably getting what I pay for but I don't have a ton of change laying around. Is there a better gun around for the price? I've got about $400.00 to spend initially.

Also what shell size should I get? 2.75", 3.0"?

Thanks in advance

What you should get depends on what you want to do with it. I looked at the Maverick 88's and the Mossberg 500's as well. I wanted a hunting shotgun that could handle small game, waterfowl and turkey. I also prefer wood over synthetic stocks, so I went with a 500 field model, comes with 28" barrel and 3 choke tubes. This pretty much will do whatever I want, though I am looking at getting a 20" barrel for turkey hunting, as it would be a little faster to point. I don't think you can go wrong with either for the price. Everyone who has tried my Mossy 500 has seemed impressed. BTW, definitely get at least a 3" chambered gun if you are considering shooting anything other than paper, clay and small game.

well if your budget is $400 then you might want to look at the Winchester Defender....they have a very fast action

18.5" is a good length for a "tactical" shotgun...remember, you can usually hold more rounds with a longer barrel and shorter (e.g. 2 3/4") shells...shorter barrels are more maneuvarable though (with more recoil, sound, smell etc.)..they also look cool...but I still prefer 18.5"

the remington 870 is reputed to be the most reliable (and customizable) pump action...you can move up to things like the Fabarm Pro Forces if you want someting more exotic.

Oh yeah...I recommend ghost ring sights
