Should I build a AR-15 or go with the Daniel defense from Wolverine?

Keep in mind, my budget is about $1400 Max so if it would be better to buy the Daniel defense and just upgrade from there let me know. I never considered building a AR but now I'm kind of considering it, just the price points could be an issue.

Buy the DD, you will pass your $1400 budget if you build, unless you are using less expensive parts or have a lot of time to gather them...in which case the DD is quicker or better made. I have a DDMk.18 and have built a 7.5 custom from a 6.5 month scavenger hunt for the parts I wanted...all depends on what you want...

Do you have the tools? If you intend to build from the ground up, you'll need a barrel wrench, action block, vice and potentially a castle nut wrench. You'll also want to have a small brass hammer and punches.

I've built dozens of AR15s, a lot using DD parts, especially the barrels. I generally choose to build my own so I can start adding the custom parts right away instead of taking apart something a factory has built. That being said, on your budget, I'd go with the already made DD rifle. It will be very hard to beat it and they are great rifles out of the box.
 
^^ Good advice. You will spend more for less quality if you try to do a ground-up build for $1,400.
 
DD makes a great rifle, and you can't go wrong. Building can be expensive, and if you don't know what you're doing even more so. Buy a DD and if there are other bells and whistles you want to put on it down the road then have at her.
 
i bought a colt and added top quality parts that I really wanted to it and a spare bcg, came to 1800 bucks.
but i have the trigger i want, the free float handguard i want, the stock i want and the compensator i want.

All items the OP can change at a later date on a well built DD rifle..

My advice is to start with the factory-built DD as a baseline. Quality all the way from what I've seen. Get some experience with it and determine the strong points and weak points of that rifle from your unique perspective and they type of shooting you want to do (I mostly shoot my ARs at 200-300 yards these days - they can be very accurate!)

Once you have that baseline, then you can swap out parts to fine tune the platform - stock (easy to swap needing only a cheap castle nut wrench), pistol grip, sights / scopes, and maybe later a barrel or just a whole new upper. ARs are the most versatile platform out there!
