Should I buy an Elcan Specter OS4x?

I am strongly leaning towards buying this scope, as I don't really need the 1-4x feature of the DR and it makes sense to go with the cheaper/lighter version. However, the negative things I read about the A.R.M.S. mount that comes with all Specters give me pause. The two main complaints are the non-adjustable levers, which means that the mount can be too tight or too lose on some rails, and the fact that the levers are apparently prone to snapping off. Are these legitimate complaints or internet hype? Do these problems persist on the newer iterations of the Elcan or are they limited to older models?

Looseness on rails means your rail is out of spec. I does occasionally happen. If it's a concern adjustable ARMS levers can be purchased.

I have never heard or seen an arms lever break. I would say that's Internet hype.

That said as a Elcan Specter DR whore (I have 4) I cant see why one would choose a fixed magnification elcan over a Trijicon ACOG.

Just saying'.

I really like my OS4x mounted on my SIG MCX. There is a reason that the British Army just purchased this exact scope for general issue with their small arms. Their field trials found that it is an excellent combat scope choice for the reasons stated by Capp325. Generally speaking (the SA80 aside), if something is good enough for the entire British Army, it is generally good enough for me. I have no use for the 1x setting of the Elcan DR, and have BUIS (or an add-on combat red-dot), which can perform the CQB sighting function for a fraction of the extra $1000 that the DR's price commands. Just saying....

I did a review of an AR15 with that scope mounted on top. Here is the link (cut and paste required - my iPhone keeps crashing when I try to embed the link).

It is a great scope.

Personally, I opt for ACOGs due to their lighter weight and lack of batteries. The eye relief is better on the Elcan compared to the ta31, but there are other ACOGs with different magnifications that have much better eye relief. My favourite is the TA33. It is only 3x, but it is extremely light weight, and the eye relief is much more than the tech specs claim. It's only con is the narrow field of view, but if you are using the BAC properly, that's not an issue.

Having used an elcan for well over 30 000 rounds...i can tell you they are quality optics. Hold zero and very rarely let you down. That being said they are slightly more mechanical than most combat sights (that strange base elcan loves using) and ive seen a few go down. ACOGs are very reliable and in my opinion alot sturdier of an optic in GENERAL. elcan has better glass, its all about weighing the pros and cons for your personal needs. Cant go wrong with either.
