Hey guys, so My first firearm purchase was a M715T flat top, love the thing, it's 22lr, 25 round mags, cant complain, Now im thinking of purchasing a new baby to play with... a Mossberg maverick 88, 5+1, 2 3/4, and 3" rated, cyl br, 18.5", full stock included, pistol grip included.

The purchase would be threw a online dealer i'v dealt with befour, so I know their service is great, what do you guys think, whats your input? Im looking for something that i can use for plinking aswell as hunting, also something that will eat any ammo sold locally, i think this should serve my needs quite well

Nope!

If you want to do any type of hunting with it the 18 inch barrel is not the way to go, and buying a replacement barrel for that gun costs more than the gun itself!

What kind of hunting do you plan on doing?

Your best bet is to buy a combo gun with 2 barrels or even 3, and Mossberg has a whole selection available.

I know it is tempting to go the cheap route and snatch that gun up, but in the long run you will regret it. I know, because I did just that.

points well taken, i appriciate the advice

plinking wise, this beast would eat* anything?

hunting wise, not recomended due to no extra chokes, and short barrel

I bought a short barreled shotgun and only slightly regret it now. I wish I had bought a combo. Unless you don't care about the money and would buy another barrel for it. I will probably do that now.

the maverick model 88 is a good starter, if your going to do any migratory bird hunting or trap shooting get the 28" barrel i have hunted with my Model 88 3" great for ducks and goose, 18" barrel mainly for hunting in the bush where you dont have a ton of room to move around

WSS sells the 88 in a Combo package, I believe 18.5" and 28", still well under $300, that's te way to go IMO. The maverick is a great shotgun, I've owned a couple and still currently have one with the 18.5 and pistol grip.

I was acually going to only deer hunt with this(18.5), this would not be suitable?

Than I would buy something with a slug barrel. Certain mossy combos come with a smooth barrel & a rifled one. Unless you are in an area where buck shot is required.

I bought a 590A1 with 18.5 which I use for upland & bought a 835 rifled barrel for slugs. However that is most certainly not the cheap way to go.

Just slugs? or buck shot?

This Maverick 18.5 should be able to shoot both, right??

If im hunting deer or any other game with birdshot, or buckshot, a longer barrel is reccomended, this is the picture im drawing, however, if im shooting slugs, whats the difference if i use this 18.5, to hunt deer? Slugs should work perfect, no? ----<for the meantime

--- in the longrun, I will eventually purchase a 2nd barrel for this, as i mainly plink, i don't even have my hunting licence at this very moment, as i mostly shoot at targets with frineds, but i mean,,, in the long run, i could eventually adapt this shotgun into a nice hunting gun, can't I?

Yes it can shoot both. You can buy rifled slugs for smooth bores that work alright. Really just think what you want to use it for. They are inexpensive guns so in a few years if it don't work well pick up something different. However I am not sure if you can find a different barrels on a maverick. The 590A1 are hard if not impossible to find but the 835 barrels fit on them{590A1 5 shot not on the 8s}. The 500 have a large selection of barrels and usually not that hard to find.

the slug will have more accuracy if used with a rifled barrel, you cant really use any bird shot or buck shot with a rifled barrel or else the pattern will circle outwards with the rifling, a longer barrel will give you a tighter grouping with buck or bird shot, a longer barrel will give you longer distance for shooting and improved accuracy

according to my research this M88 will take all mossberg 500 parts, ecept the forgrip.

that means, all aftermarket stocks, barrels, inside parts etc built for mossberg 500's, will infact work with this m88 shotgun

finding parts to fix this gun down the road should be simple, as it's interchangeable all with the mossberg 500 line, everything cept the forhand guard

id be able to use birdshot, buckshot, and slugs, im just wonderin if ppl hunt with 18.5" barrels haha

my main use would be plinking/target shooting, and with the possibility of hunting in the future, but mainly plinking/fun out in the bush

I had an old Maverick 88 that I chopped from 30" to 18/12", bought for 100$. Killed many partridge and squirrels. Ate everything I fed it, threw slugs out to 50yrds no problem. I traded it in for an M590A1 Blackwater, now I miss my little chopped up maverick. It was a reliable and LIGHT little shotty. Now I have a seperate 535 mossberg with a 24" turkey barrel and a cantilever slug barrel scoped out for deer, also a great way to go. Nothing wrong with a maverick, but if you're a fairly serious hunter I'd hit up the combo 500 or 535, GREAT value there.

I had mine fitted with a hogue forgrip that wouldn't fit my buddies 535 but ran awesome on the little 88. The dual vs. single action bars don't affect the forend at all. The main difference other than the action rods is the safety is on the trigger group instead of a tang on the receiver. I think that affects stock interchangeability and anything you'd want to do with the trigger group. from there up they are identical (excluding the action rods).

I hunt upland birds with my 590A1 with a 18 ½ barrel no issues I use lead shot which helps{or I tell myself any how}.
