Should I even bother trying??

This looks like a perfect opportunity to remove the rust using the electrolysis method. Search it out here at CGN. It's cheap, extremely easy, and effective. If you've got a battery charger, you're basically ready to go. It'll even suck it out of the pits.

Oh, you have to make sure the steel is completely degreased first.

crime gun?

Nah, Long story short a lazy farmer (good family friend) lost it in the marsh behind his farm .. my father helped him find it the next season past but left it disassembled in the box for 20 some-odd years.

The farmer never remebers if it was registered or not which means it probably wasn't .. but I can assure you that I have scold'ed him for forgetting about it

I will soak the components this weekend .. lotsa pics will be taken :)

Lets all try to breath new life into this old girl.

EDIT -

Is electrolytic rust removal this simple? Put item, water and baking soda in a bucket, clamp a car batt. charger to a scrap rod and the neg to the part ... and then just turn on and wait? Man, I could do that in like 20 minutes! I think I am going to check out some "rust removing" chems at home hardware first though .. i've heard good things about them.

Yes, I've done it myself, works great. I understand it WILL remove bluing; not a problem for you. It'll take longer than 20 minutes, but works extremely well. Oh, use Washing Soda, apparently it works better. Keep the steel electrode (anode? cathode?) fairly clean to maintain effectiveness. It works by 'line of sight', so you may have to turn the parts to face the electrode to thoroughly remove the rust.

And replacement M12 stocks are readily available.

Wanna see my project?

Buddy gave me this:

I took it apart part way:

Now I'm here:

Not sure where to go next. I think I'll polish the whole darn thing as shiny as I can with emery closth and cold blue it.

Bore is in fair to good shape with some pitting so I'm reluctant to do much more until I try shooting it.

Spent $50.00 for a butt stock so far and $6.99 on a bottle of gasket remover to get epoxy paint off and $3.00 for a brass brush to brush rust off.

The old herbacide bottle might be worth something ) Rod

I'd like to see Horatio Cains sunglasses pull a stunt like that !

rust

For any really rusty parts you might want to consider soaking overnight in water, Yes H20 then blow dry with an air hose and have at it with steel wool while dry. Water actually work good at loosening up the rust and it won't coorode any further in the amount of time because the rust acts as a barrier to the metal. Just soak with your kroil after and then clean off and steel wool again.

And yes I think you should give it a try!

Well if you get stuck you could always ship it out to me.We have a great deal of experience in restoring old guns and I like a challenge. If it were me I'd bead blast it,reparkerize it and buff out the barrel. The wood would be up to you.But I can fix up the metal no worries. And no charge too.It would be a fun project.

So I go out to a farm to find this old beat up wooden box the owner found buried in his barn ..

Now this shotgun is probably unregistered, but as I am 'in process' of trying to identify it, and then call to verify it, I believe I am okay with the Amnesty.

This picture does not do the pitting justice..

I think this trigger group is seized due to rust..
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i75/slushee1234/SSPX0042.jpg

I think the white areas on this stock are mold?!
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i75/slushee1234/SSPX0043.jpg

I am having difficulty getting the data stamp information from this barrel .. you can see the rust and pitting..
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i75/slushee1234/SSPX0044.jpg

I have been able to figure out its a Winchester Repeating Arms shotgun .. but the rest is very unreadable.

So, considering the shape, and that it is taking me a few months to refinish a regular shotgun stock .. where would one begin with this 'project'

All on your own I say soak that old devil in hot break free "or some other penetrating oil" for a few days then a serious cleaning with steel wool, soak again for a few days ad nauseum until its clean enough to your eye.

Between oil soakings use naval jelly to get off the real nasty patches of metal fungus "rust"

Blue the parts, reassemble and get new stock wood if needed and whammo:eek:

All is well again.

Side note I just started exploring this thread , I all of a sudden am starting to gain a whole new admiration for shooters of modern arms!!

Cheers
