Should I Even Buy Ammo?

55 cents for 9mm is a great deal?

With ammo and historical prices, "good deal" is fairly relative. Comparing to just two years ago, in retrospect those prices were "good deals" in the context of today's prices, but at the time, they were considered inflated prices, as compared to previous years'. Seems with ammo, there will never be a real benchmark of a good value since the goal posts for the price ranges keep moving...and upwards trajectory wise. So what constitutes a good deal now is only in relation to similar products in today's pricing climate. In a few years' time, everything sold at today's prices is more than likely going to be good deals in light of future prices.

Obviously no one wants to pay more than they have to so the challenge is always finding the lowest prices of a jacked up pricing structure. It's like gas. My kids are telling me 1.66 per liter is a good price. I tell them no it's not. Compared to over $2.00 it is, but it wasn't that long ago that prices were under a buck. Even then my Dad says it's a rip off as he remembers prices in the 35 cent range.

Anyone new getting into shooting...current prices for ammunition will serve as their benchmark going forward.

Well said.

Since I am brand new to shooting; I cannot relate to prices 2, 3, 5, 10 years ago. Obviously, all of us wish that ammo prices were cheaper. That said, if you are brand new to the sport and you don't have ammo and you want to engage in the sport; you do your research on the best ammo for your particular gun(s) and then Google for the best prices.

I’ve only had my PAL since October 2021, but even over the past 10 months I’ve seen some substantial increases for certain brands/calibres. For example the federal AE .223 55gr FMJ in a 20pk box was selling at retailers for $16-18, but now are $21-25! With the bulk packs (PMC, federal, Winchester) I thought 60-70cents /rd was a “good” price, but have occasionally seen some old out of stock webpages with 40-50 cents /rd pricing at the time. Hopefully pricing will level off, but I doubt it will go down. Other calibres such as 6.5CM and 12ga didn’t seem to increase as much, at least from what I saw.
