Should I get a Hawkeye?

I was in the gun store in Yellowknife the other day and fell in love with the Ruger Hawkeye. I would have bought it on the spot but I did not like the caliber. Upon reflection, I recall reading some bad news about the rifle, something about inherent inaccuracy and something else to do with a poor trigger.

I was thinking of ordering one in 257 Roberts. But I am worried I might get stuck with a lemon. On the other hand, guys who complain about the Hawkeye might be a bunch of losers looking for an alibi for poor shooting.

Any thoughts?
 
The Roberts is a great classic. Mine has become a favourite and will shoot Nosler ABs at over 3100fps into one inch.

Buy the rifle, have it floated, bedded and the trigger done. Most likely it WILL shoot! :)

all Ruger 'reviews' must be taken with a grain of salt. Bill Ruger pissed off a lot of people with his politics a long time ago, and even though hes dead aparently there are many people that still bash Ruger on a daily basis because of the old politics - and it has nothing to do with the actual quality of the gun. because of this you never know the true motives of a Ruger reviewer, so you kindof have to evaluate them yourself based on their own merits. I took a chance on a Ruger and never looked back - theyre my favorite rifle manufacturer. ive had no accuracy problems - all of the bolt actions are sub-MOA.

IMO Ruger produces one of the best factory rifles on the market today. they have maintained their quality, even improved it, where many other rifle manufacturers like Remington are resorting to cost-cutting measures like plastic parts, poor fit and finish, etc on their products.

also keep in mind that a Ruger rifle is actually around $75+ cheaper than any rifle you price-compare it to since it comes with a very good set of scope rings/integrated bases.

Ruger rifles are quite accurate. I have posted plenty of good Ruger groups here.

$30 with a gunsmith can make the trigger into what it should be- nice and smooth.
 
I haven't played with the new Ruger trigger but I've heard good things about them. In the old days Rugers didn't have a great reputation as their barrels were sub par. They've since taken over production of their own barrels and the accuracy has jumped up a great deal.

Keep in mind that Ruger has put a different trigger, the LC6, in the Hawkeye. I've heard generally positive things about the new trigger. (i.e. it doesn't COMPLETELY suck!).
I'm also toying with the idea of a Hawkeye in .257 Roberts. If they had that chambering in stainless, I'd already have one! I've yet to own a Ruger, but I really don't want to buy another centrefire rifle unless I sell one. Hmmmm.....
 
As some of the guys here know that I am a big Ruger fan. All of the Rugers I have owned have been accurate and never once caused me any problems. My latest addition is the Ruger Hawkeye in .358win. I have done nothing to the rifle other than polish the trigger and it shoots very nice with a few different combinations so far:
