Should I get a M&P 9mm range kit?

Hey! Looking for my first pistol since I've had my damn RPAL for a few years now. Was thinking of a Glock but I'm gonna wait a bit for that (little bit out of my price range right now). I'd like to stick to $650 max for the first pistol. I also was thinking of a Ruger SR9 but I'm clueless on what to get.

I know classic thread right I've searched them for a week now and still cannot decide. Thanks guys!
 
go for it. the accessories, especially the quick loader, make it the best value for the buck! A twist is that, if you know you will be moving onto other bigger calibers like 40S&W, you could buy the MP40 kit instead, and then buy a 9mm conversion barrel to have two calibers in one gun for cheap. that's what I did when I started a year ago. very happy with it. the only thing I changed once I got used to the gun was the apex flat faced trigger kit which makes the gun a excellent shooter.

The Ruger SR9, SIG 320, HK, FN, Glock, Walther and S&W are all excellent polymer striker fired guns. Personal preference in ergonomics, cost, grip size/feel and trigger pull will dictate what fits you. At your budget, there is nothing wrong with the M&P series. The range kit is all you need to get into competition. Just make sure you have a proper belt.
As jermyzy said, maybe save for the Apex trigger kit. It definitely makes the long creepy pull a lot more bearable!
 
M&P is okay, Glock is better. I would save up.

Honestly, I have both and much prefer the Glock. (Trigger, grip (rtf and Gen4), ease of maintenance, part availability etc.)

it's not that I don't have enough it's just I also want to get another rifle soon. Gosh these damn things are addicting! I want a Glock 21 gen 4 damn thing is ###y but 9mm is a little cheaper lol
 
I have an M&P and it's great.... But I also picked up a FNS9 and it came with 3 mags and a nice case for around the same price. I have to say IMO it's the beats out M&P and Glock. Better trigger than both and good ergonomics like the M&P. It's as accurate as you can shoot and more than worth the price. But the M&P is a fine first gun and will run flawlessly.

You won't be sorry. They're every bit as reliable as a Glock (despite the kool-aid drinkers ;)), and are a lot more ergonomic for many of us. I really don't care for the Glock 'feel' myself....as it feels a little like shooting a 2x4....:). The trigger isn't perfect on it, but neither is the one on a stock Glock. Once your a little more comfortable around the gun, a better trigger can be installed or the existing one can be tweaked. The range kit is a great deal, you get a good lockable case, the extra mag and the UpLula, which is possibly the greatest thing since sliced bread. I've had the M&P 40 kit for about four years now, and it won't be headed down the road anytime soon.....
 
+1 for Glock gen4. I sold my M&P once gen4 came out.

you can get one for lightly used even unfired easy for what M&P will cost you after tax.
 
It's definitely a great value, but if you have the patience to wait for a sale, you might be able to find a Pro for close to the same price. When I was searching for my first purchase, I got the M&P 9 Pro for just a little more than the kit and haven't looked back. I've spoken with IPSC shooters that have the non-pro, and they've mentioned the trigger could use some work.

I have or have had the M&P, FNS9, H&K P30, CZ 75 SP 01 Shadow, and Glock 22, the S&W's trigger isn't as slick as the SA on the CZ, but I have zero complaints on the M&P 9 Pro.

Did the same as Luckey here. Picked up a 40 pro core on sale and a 9mm barrel as well as mags as they are plenty cheap. So now I have 2 in 1. One thing to note is the POI shift. In my case it was minimal I.e. the width of the front sight post.
