should I go 20 or 410 for 12 year old??

The .410 shotgun, although reasonably popular, remains something of an enigma. It is either a beginner's gun or an expert's gun, but is seldom seen in the hands of average shooters and hunters.

Chuck Hawks...and he's right.

I just remembered that Mossberg used to make a bolt action shotgun that used a detachable magazine and carried an adjustable polychoke. I had a 20 version years ago that cost me a little over $100 used, which would put it within his price range. It also had a notched rear site that made it double as a short range slug gun for deer.

That's exactly what my father bought for me when I was 12. It worked just fine on rabbits and pheasant and I don't recall ever noticing the recoil.

In retrospect I don't see much point in a bolt action shotgun. Still, if I ever see a used one around I might just buy it for old time's sake.
