Should I return my 597?

597's and 10/22 are hit and miss. 597's more so than the 10/22's. IMHO both are crap. We get way more 597's returned for repair than 10/22's. You take your chances with both of them. IMHO.

To be honest I thought 10/22 had a good reputation for reliability, but not so much for accuracy. You sound like you work/own retail, whats you opinion on the marlin 795?

An important thing to do with the 597 is remove the guide rods and springs and clean them well. Lubricate them with a dry teflon lube and when you reassemble only tighten the allen screws holding the rods in finger tight. If you plan on keeping the gun adding a volquartsen extractor and hammer are great upgrades.

This right here. I usually always run CCI Blazer through my 597 and rarely have any issue with feeding, I am also using the original hammer and extractor. I also never polished the rods, and I don't see any need to.

The 30-round mags from Remington are pretty crappy for both loading and inserting. As said before, sand down the contact edges of the mags so that they will fall out on their own when the release is pulled. This will ensure they are inserting and seating properly. I used a Dremel with a sanding disc and found that it worked quite well. Just make sure you don't take too much off, especially on the backside where the release mechanism engages on the mag.

Thanks for all of the many replys!

Here's an update:
I ended up taking it back and they accepted it. The manager of cabelas Edmonton told me they had received returns on approximately 1 in every 4 sold infact another fella showed up to return his while I was waiting to get a refund. Purchased a ruger 10/22 to replace it and I couldn't be more happy with the choice.

The model was a Remington 597 LSS for those wondering. Once again thank you for all input and recommendations.

"What makes you think they will take it back?"
LOL, had that same conversation with Bass Pro about a 597. You can return it as long as it hasn't been fired. Well, if it hasn't been fired, how do I know if I need to return it?
Catch 22 gents.
You know its almost as if gun owner/buyers/sellers in Canada feel guilty about it and subconsciously want to be punished. Weird
