Should I sell my 870 express to buy a Mossy 500??

Iv'e got a Remington 870 express 28", the older model with metal trigger guard, and wood stock, and was wondering what you guys thought about selling it in order to buy a new Mossberg 500 28"/18.5" synthetic stock.

Im going to use this shotgun to go hunting for my first time this season, it will probably see rain, humidity and snow.
Now I know there have been many problems with the 870 express but this is an older model in impeccable condition.

Im looking at realiability, thougness and how resistant it is to the elements, like humitity and freezing. A little surface rust will not kill me, so this will not be my deciding factor...

Also ive seen the recent thread about the 2 guns but id like some info on the older 870 express that i have.
 
pffffffftt not a chance. Why would you ever do that? ever hold a Mossberg 500? they are aluminum receiver compared to your steel one, They are just cheaply built compaired to the 870. I own both, I use my mossberg for deer hunting (rifled barrel) but my 870 does everything else, waterfowl, turkeys, trap,crows and coyotes.

Aside from reading on the errornet that Expresses rust, what IS your deciding factor as compared to a Mossberg?

Everything rusts if you don't pay attention and oil it.

Your 870 will not grow moss on one side if it gets a bit wet.
 
In a word. NO.

I think everyone should have at least one 870. Those older ones are especially nice. And there are many accessory barrels out there to accommodate just about any type of hunting you would use a shotgun for.

exactly why i said it will not be a factor in my decision......

My deciding facters are, is the gun going to feed everyting i want it too, especially when its clean,

is anything going to brake ie. the stock, the safety, the trigger,,

and is the gun going to work even if it comes into contact with a bit of dirt/snow.

The Express model came out in 1987, prior to that they came out with the Special Purpose.

You like the Mossberg 500, by all means, sell off your 870exp and fill your boots, your the one using it. Mossberg is a good gun, and will serve you well, but I think you only need another barrel and some BreekFree. Remington Oil/grease isn't bad at all either.

I wouldn't worry about an 870 breaking or failing to feed. As many on this forum will attest they are one of the most reliable shotguns out there. Nothing fancy, but like an old friend, it can be counted on when the going is tough.

Hi easy. I guess I just haven't had much to say in the past couple of years. I didn't realize I would be missed. That special 870 you sold me is still one of the nicest guns in the cabinet.

Now that was funny :)

I own both an 870 express and a wingmaster and both are as smooth as glass. Both have seen some pretty crappy weather over the last 5 or 6 years and both still look great and function perfectly.

Look after them and they will look after you.
 
Worried about rust (on any firearm)? RIG gun grease is your friend; by the way RIG stands for 'rust inhibiting grease'. A thin coat of same on your firearms is the ticket. I own both the Remington and Mossberg models and I much prefer the 870.
 
dont sell it...its an awesome shotgun.
you will not benefit from buying a mossberg.
just clean it lube it and blast off.
only one thing you need to know if the length of the stock fits you or needs to be adjusted.
ask your local gunsmith.

I am now in possession of my father-in laws old 1987 3" 870 Express. The gun has seen the harshest environments from frozen moments stuck in a lake to being tossed on the bottom of the boat and being used as a paddle. It has shot over 1000 ducks and geese in its 23 years and still works flawlessly, it was bought brand new and tremclad camo'd and now wears synthetic stocks and all the metal has been krylon camo'd.

They are cheap tough ass guns with one purpose and that is being used. There is no collector value or much value at all so keep it use it and abuse it.

You can buy cheap stocks on the EE here everyone sells them, the ones on this gun are off a Norinco or a grizzly 870 and cost $50 bucks.

I am going to refinish the original wood one day in a dark oil finish.

Nice paint job! Im also going to refinish my wood stock in a dark colour, and buy a synthetic one to slap on when the weather is really bad.

Does it have a fixed full choke? Maybe the only real reason to look at selling it for the Mossberg.
