Should I trust my digital caliper?

Unless you are really really needing the accuracy, it is a fine tool for the job.

If you really want to know if it is as accurate as it says on the box, you pretty much have to find someone with a set of gage blocks and start measuring them to see just how accurate the caliper is in YOUR hands. That way you get to see how the measurements fare, with YOUR feel.

In reality, it does not make much difference what the caliper reads, as long as the rounds feed, and they are all the same within reason. I'll let you determine what you tolerance range should be. But I will say, if you are expecting to measure plus or minus a thou, and are expecting to match a particular length accurately, you are probably the owner of the wrong tool for the job. Seems contradictory, but really, it's about whether the tool can be relied upon to give the correct measurement, consistently, or whether it gives the same measurement (that may not be correct) consistently.

Having a few 'test object' to use to check the caliper against, so you have more than just the Zero point to go by, is one way to see how accurately you can measure with the tools in hand. Whether those test objects are precision ground pins, gage blocks, setting standards from a micrometer set, etc, or simply a part that has been accurately measured with known good tools. If it is actually pretty close to the range in size of the part you are about to check, so much the better.

For what you are using it for, though, it's just fine. Lyman and RCBS are happy enough to put their stickers on cheap Chinese calipers, and charge much more for them. :)

If you want to test yours (and your measuring feel), grab one case, measure it, write down the number, put it down, pick it up and do the same again a few times in a row. See what you get for variations. Do it with the numbers facing away from you as you measure, so you do not adjust pressure to get the number you expect.

Oh yeah. look up the SAMMI specs of your cartridge and chamber. Comparing the min and max cartridge and chamber sizes can be educational!

The problem with "cheap" ones is that some of them are great, and some are garbage. The problem is separating the two.

Generally if a good, cheap one works well, it will continue to work well.

The way they measure is the movable jaw with the sensor is "reading" a calibrated, imbedded strip in the arm of the caliper, it is called linear encoding. As long as the reader and strip are not damaged the calibration will be good. This method of reading is exactly the same for the both the cheap and expensive units. The difference will be quality control between the cheap and expensive units. Other than quality control, there is little difference between the units.

I have a Mitutoyo Digital caliper, which I use for measuring things like case length, COL, etc.
For more precise measurement I use a Starrett Vernier Micrometer.
As some said, your results depend somewhat on your "feel", but I am the only guy using them, so all is good.

Really? You're working up a load watching for .001" of case head expansion but miss it because the cheap caliper doesn't see it. Well you won't miss the expansion from the subsequent powder increment! Best just to use that thing as a case length gauge.

I dont test loads over max, and I keep my loads under books max suggested loads. I'm not in a .001 more exp will kill me situation.... I dont measure case width. I dont have presure signs and I dont have trouble extracting.

Unfortunately in our Liability filled world, the next round of reloading books will again, be so much more conservate than the last bunch, some rounds might not make it out the barrel & you'll be hunting with a stick that barely goes pop ;):)
 
I'm a machinist, and I wouldn't trust a +/- .001 tolerance to a caliper EVER, let alone a $15 cambodian tire one. Hell, i've checked a part with 3 different digital calipers from guys at work (one mitutoyo, one starrett, and one kurt) and ended up with a different measurement with each one. Checked with a height stand, and the best was off by .0005 (the minimum measurement that any of them would show). I remember when i was in school, our instructor told us, don't EVER trust a caliper to be accurate within closer than .002.

That said, I'm not so sure that .001 seating length is going to make a whole lot of difference. The caliper is probably going to get you "close enough". 0.1 grains of powder is probably going to make more difference than seating depth. Save your pennies, and buy a set of 0-3 micrometers off of ebay for $100. Or, save the 100 bucks, and put it towards a good scale.

lol. im reading yours and thinking "Wow you trust a caliper to 2 microns !?" then realized you were working in imperial :) its taken me a year to get used to metric where i work now and converting everything from imp to metric.

As for the OP. 1 to 2 thou is not going to make a real difference to your reloading.
 
The only way to know if it's accurate is to have a set of calibration blocks and check it. They are reasonably accurate but they do mess up occasionally. Some pople can work them better than others.
 
For those of you trying to split a thou via OAL...you're much better men than me :D

"Pointless" comes to mind. As said earlier "0.1 grains of powder will matter more than a thou or half a thou."
 
Bullets are not acurate to .001" to begin with so unless you're sorting bullets base to ogive to the .001" it's pointless.
I never measure COAL but base to ogive since my seating die doesn't seat onto the tip.
 
And doing what Boomer suggests, trusting measures of case head expansion to gauge pressure is not a starter. Depending on cartridge, chamber smoothness, case brand, and probably a gazillion other variables not yet discoverd by professional ballisticians, by the time you can detect case head expansion, your pressures may be over by tens of percent. I.E. a SAAMI 63000 cup max may be running 80 or 80 K before the case shows permanent deformation.

Long before one gets to max in a book, be sensitve to bolt lift, extraction, and velocity increment. If the bolt is tough to lift, go back. If the case is hard to extract, go back. And if the increment in velocity is not consistent with similar velocity increments for similar charge increments, go back. If you rely on unrelaible indicators such as case head expansion, you may well dwell in overpressure land for ever. Why bother? If you want faster than book, buy faster than book.
