Should Southern Ontario hunters stay out of Northern Ontario

This wae the topic of an all day discussion on an all day call in on radio station CFNO in Marathon while we were up there moose hunting a couple of weeks ago. Due to hunting activities we spent little time listening to the little squawk box we had for weather but the little bit I did hear was in favour of our money coming north.

So you're going to limit the right to hunt for food based on geography?

There are a lot of people employed by industries that support hunting/travelling. People of treaty status have rights to hunt, I'm sure if pushed we could argue we all have rights to hunt (legally).

What better way to kill the economy more then restricting the income of the North by removing access to the south/others.

What should be done is diversifying the way money is spent, and making Joe schmoe have to donate not just those purchasing licensing and tags.

The people I know in northern Ontario were disappointed I wasn't coming this year, due to lack of spare funds since I am building a new house.

Most of them have no concerns about COVID, they have gone through the same senseless lockdowns the rest of Ontario has, and they have ridiculously low numbers of COVID cases.

I think the northern tourist outfitters felt a huge hit during the summer months without southern money. Restricting southerns for hunting would completely cripple the north.

The northern Ontario tourism outfitters took a terrible hit due to no US tourists. We stayed at a camp a few weeks ago during our archery moose hunt and they were near bankrupt due to no US visitors. They’ve made no payments on their mortgage this summer and if the border doesn’t open next spring, they’ll just walk away from their investment.

A vast majority of northern Ontario camps, campgrounds and outfitters totally rely on US tourists to stay afloat.

It's funny the differing outlooks on things in some northern towns. I was closing down my cottage last week and had to head into town for a couple things. One store limited the amount of people going in while the 2 others I visited, the workers weren't even wearing masks. At the same time, most locals in that town don't want anyone that doesn't live within town limits to even drive through. There's always been a bit of a divide between some northern and southern Ontario residents. Covid likely won't help it but it also won't change it.

Same here in BC. Catering to US and overseas hunters willing to pay big dollars in US funds. Survival may very well mean attracting resident and non-resident Canadian hunters.

Same here in Alberta. Years of pricing hunts catering to US hunters has left them high and dry. Many tried to encourage Canadian hunters by offering big discounts and they just didn't get the hunters. I only heard of one outfitter claiming to be booked solid and turning business away. Several allocations have come up for sale this fall.

This goes both ways. We have a bow hunt and rifle hunt my family has put together in upper Michigan. A large group from our sportsmans club has found hunting property nearby and we all rent accommodations from the same small family campground. The small town nearby takes in thousands from canadian hunters.

With no us money the southerns are their only income. Not to many northern residents pay big coin for outfitters when they can hunt in their own back yard
