Should the op rod spring guide fit loosely within the op rod spring?

Hey Nutz!

I have a M305 (22" barrel) for which I bought a fluted Badger Ordnance spring guide. It seems that the Norinco spring fits quite tightly over the guide, to the point that when I was first fitting it I wasn't sure it was going to fit. I managed to get it into the spring by lightly twisting the spring in order to get it to expand a tiny bit. Even with a good deal of Lithium multipurpose grease, the spring does not glide easily over the surface of the guide (in fact it barely does). Is this normal?

The original Norinco "stamped" spring guide fit within the spring quite loosely. I also bought a Wolff spring but I haven't had a chance to try that on. Hopefully I will be able to get some pictures of what's happening in the next few days.

Think you might need a USGI spring.Thats what i needed when i installed my Sadlak spring guide.Brownells/treeline/hungry can all provide you with the USGI spring.

The Norc op rod spring is of a slightly smaller diameter than USGI or Wolff springs. Badger op rod spring guides are made for USGI/Wolff springs (as would I assume Sadlak or any other American maker).

Any of the Canadian made op rod spring guides fit the Norc springs though, as well as USGI and Wolff.

Yup, the CDN made (NEA, S&J, Magwedge, Tartan Tactical, Rauch Tactical) will fit the smaller ID (interior diameter) Norc springs.

If you must drink the KoolAid (Badger Ordnance, Sadlak, Smith Ent) then spring a few bucks for the USGI configured / dimensioned spring. I have a few of those that I bring to the M14 clinics (they are even longer, too). :D

Now get out and shoot yer M14! :D

Cheers,
Barney
