Should there be a limit on bow hunting?

I just watched "Peterson's hunting" on Wild TV. He used a bow hunting buffalo. One shot in, the buffalo ran. They followed, and found the buffalo sitting in the bush. He shot a second arrow in the animal, the buffalo ran again. They followed. Then the buffalo came out bush, walking on the trail, blood coming from its mouth. He put the third arrow in the buffalo. The buffalo walked away. The hunter said "he (the buffalo) is tough". Moment later, the PH found the buffalo. It was finally dead.

I feel it is very disturbing to me. It seems that bow hunting is not a good choice for animals like buffalo. The prolonged pain suffered by those animals is unnecessary. The ethic hunting should be killing game humanly, bow hunting on buffalo is not!

No I think stupid people should stop hunting.
Hunting show are the worst thing for the sport they often show bull#### terrible shots made by people that shouldnt be hunting. Im planning a bow hunting trip to namibia right now and have talked to lots pf people that bow hunted cape buffalo and thw one thing I hear over and over is shot placement and quality broadheads. Just becouse an animal is big dosnt mean its invincible, put in the time practicing and tuning and studying shot placement it isnt rocket science.

Dont like watching Buffalo being hunted with archery equipment?
Simple, dont watch Buffalo hunts by TV personalities using archery equipment.
Indians where doing it long before the white man came along with his Buffalo Rifle.
You are entitled to your opinion though.
Seems easy enough to me.

Hunting is something you should do, not watch, hardly a Spectator sport.

Most Cape Buffs end up with multiple bullets in them too...

Arrows are completely different from bullets in how they execute the demise of a creature. The sliced tissue and hemorrhage caused by arrows while not painless, is far less traumatic than is witnessed visually. Forty years of bowhunting and hundreds of animals harvested has thoroughly educated me in the humane effectiveness of archery equipment on big game... even buffalo, rhino, hippo, elephant and big bears for that matter.

In my opinion, you jumped the gun in your judgment of bowhunting.

We allow deer time to lay down and bleed out. Buffalo must be followed up right away. You follow any animal after its been arrow ed and they're capable of running further and harder until they die. Buffalo are big and have a lot of air and blood
It's a lot better then lions ripping them apart or starving to death when their teeth wear down

Sounds to me like the first shot was not to bad if it slowed it down enough the get another shot into it with out getting trampled to death. Means he got with in 40 yards three times.

There is something that needs to be cleared up here. A bow has its limit due to its construction and power. However, using a rifle is a different story. It has endless choices to move up to high hitting power. 30-06 does not work well for buffalo? fine, we can move up to 375HH, or 500 Nitro Express.
Yes, there are cases you have to shoot 5,6 times using your 300 grain X bullets. You need to move to a bigger caliber next time.
For a bow, you don't have much room to move up. I know, you can improve your marksmanship, but it has a limit too.

So where would you draw the line on 'bigger animals?'

This is the way of thinking that led to the 1980ish total ban on archery in the UK.

The same island country that thier Welsh cousins invented the deadly 'English' war bow and Robin Hood.

My friend, you are badly misinformed and have little understanding of archery equipment.

Long before modern archery equipment; bows, arrows, broadheads... archery pioneers eg. Fred Bear and Howard Hill cleanly harvested BULL ELEPHANT with "longbows" and "cedar" arrows. Hundreds of elephant, rhino, hippo and Cape buffalo have been taken since... cleanly, with single arrows.

You are wrong about not being able to "go up" in power... there is a world of difference between a 40 pound recurve and a 90 pound hard cam bow... likewise, between heavy carbon arrows and traditional cedar arrows.

The only limitation to archery equipment is the distance that an arrow can be precisely placed in the kill zone of the quarry. I have taken hundreds of big game with archery equipment, at distances better measured in feet than yards, and have never had the need or desire to take a shot over forty yards... inside that distance I am confident my arrow will strike within an inch or two of where I am aiming.

Also, there is not an animal on earth that cannot be cleanly and ethically taken with a single broadhead equipped arrow.

This... doesn't make any sense to me. If you can simply move up to a bigger cal for your gun... I think you mean cartridge but anyways... could you not just move up to a bigger bow? Sure you'll get to a point where you cant competently use the bow because its so hard to pull, but the same stands for rifles. Eventually you'll get to a point where they'll be so punishing that you wont be able to competently shoot them. Most buffs get at least a second "insurance" shot. It doesn't matter what you are using, they are some of the toughest things on the planet. Covered in mud, thick hide, heavy bones and with bodies that absorb bullets. PH's get trampled by them, and it's not because they weren't using something big, its because buffs can be so tough.

Heavier draw weight, heavier arrow,heavier/better broadheads
However shot placement will still trump all these so a heavier draw weight wont help if you cant pull and hold the bow, heavy arrows and quality broadheada dont mean #### if you miss.

Missing with a heavy bow is just as effective as missing with a .500 NE.

Hoyt, I respect your opinion on a lot of things, but this statement I can't agree with. How on earth is being shot by an arrow less traumatic then the visual of said arrow? If anything I'd say its more traumatic.

Understand I am not saying that bows are not suitable for hunting (I own a recurve and crossbow), but I think you are very much minimizing the arrows effects.

if you watch a deers reaction to a arrow it is like thy got stung by a bee ,A lot of times thy will run a little ways then stop and look around like thy are trying to figure out what happened ..not like a slug or high speed bullet ,, ,seems like thy feel less if the arrow passes right threw fast with out the thump of hitting a big bone ,,really hard to tell what thy feel ,but thy always say that a sharp knife hurts less then a dull one ,,,Dutch
