For the forums that have, the results have been horrid. There are quite a few sub forums which have populations of shooters but no posts. There have been site dedicated to a discipline that have died.
Blending all the shooters in one pot allows for sharing of ideas, and expertise. Our community is small enough as it is.
This idea has popped up many times in the past. If there is subforum, there will be more discussion on the topic. That is rarely the case.
If people want to talk about a subject, they will post regardless of the title on the top of the forum.
AND if a shooter wants to discuss something, make a post. Either there will be a conversation or not.
Years back, I started a post on my journey with the 223 in F TR. Good grief, that interest was massive. The views were huge and I have been contacted by shooters outside of NA that found the conversation of interest. Who would have thunk?
A special forum doesn't make the post any more special. If there is interest, it will be at the top of the page and easy to find. Otherwise, it will not.
Today, the tastes are one thing. Next year, could evolve to be another. If we don't share our interests in a common area, how will anyone join us?
The rebuttal about "factory rifles are not precision rifles". Why do we need to answer so many newbie questions. And similar to me is misplaced.
Our sport is dying of old age NOT antigunners. I am thrilled that there are newbie questions to even answer. Visit other US based sites and it might surprise you how little discussion these boards have even with a 10 times larger population and they LIVE guns.
This is one of THE BEST forums that I bother posting on. By nature it is accomodating and inclusive. Sure, there are heated discussions from time to time BUT overall, it is helpful.
And that help received while tuning up some "hunting" rifle, leads to a new barrel, interest in improving skills, maybe even a trip to a club open house, and hopefully, another competitor. At the very least, it might empower the shooter to solve a problem and enjoy the sport more. Hell, just stay in the sport. Which might create more local interest.
Right now, almost all of our ranges are in jeopardy of closing. The Govt isn't going to make developing ranges a priority anytime soon. Maybe, that newbie you just helped OWNS a big honking chuck of land somewhere and decides a 1000yds range would be kind of nice to play on. We have no idea who is on the other end of that moniker.
You can visit sites which have segregated forums and where a very small population debate (many times fight) on minutae. Unless you are already well entrenched, pretty darn boring and more importantly, hostile. I have seen responses to newbies almost rude because question were too basic. Maybe that could be another Tony Bowyer or Jim Croft just waiting to start a new sport.... He or She Aint coming back.
I know many will not like this statement but in precision shooting, there is precious little left to discuss. The rate limiting factor is most certainly NOT the equipment anymore. With a reasonble budget, any shooter can now get podium quality equipment in any discipline. Until the rules of the sport changes, there will be little evolution in the gear for the foreseeable future.
The only real discusion left is how to dominate the conditions in competition and that turns the mirror back to the shooter and SHOOTING.
Until our ranges are full of shooters every weekend and competitions of all disciplines sell out, there is strength in combining the numbers we have now.
My 2 cents...or is that Nickle now?
