Hi everyone!

I'm completely new to the sport of shooting and was advised that CGN is a great place for any gun related information, so any advice/comments are appreciated!

A little about myself…

The only times I’ve shot guns were at ‘touristy’ places: Wild West Shooting Centre in Edmonton (hand guns only) and at The Gun Store in Las Vegas (tried out the M249, Colt M16 and my favorite PS90!). My brother (hi Shinato!) has been target shooting for almost a year now, so naturally I do what he does. With any luck I should have my RPAL within a month or so.

Living in downtown Toronto, I find it quite difficult to find a gun range that is relatively close by and does not cost an exorbitant amount of money. The clubs I’m looking into are Guelph Rod & Gun Club and Lakeshore Arms Academy – anyone has any comments about these clubs? Any suggestions for other clubs?

Also, are there any training courses or instructors in the Toronto area that teach basic marksmanship to new shooters? I would likely need some help getting started and unfortunately I can’t ask my brother as he lives in Edmonton!

Thanks and looking forward to hearing from fellow Torontonians/GTAers/CGNers!

Also shot for the 1st time at wild west in edmonton and thats when I know I wanted to get into shooting

If you are looking at guelph, you might as well look into the alliston club too.

There is also target sports near newmarket.

Thanks luke s and P12! How much are the memberships to these clubs?

Target Sports would have been ideal but it's too expensive at $655.

Guelph Rod and Gun Club

I am a member of GRGC, good club, If you want to become a member you will have to go through a new shooter course and 1 year probation - just like most other clubs.

At GRGC you cannot shoot alone, and one out of the two persons must be an Range Safety Officer.

You can have a look at the website for more info.

Good Luck, lots of fun times ahead for you...

Welcome to CGN :)

Target would be ideal for me too.. but not at that price. I have heard good things about Guelph. Another popular choice for us GTAers is Silverdale. Bit of a haul but a great range.

Good luck!

Hello DieselGirl and welcome to the forum.

x2,

the no shooting alone really is a bummer. But on most nice days or the weekends there are people there.

Welcome to the site.

I'm not sure about the exact price for Galt but it depends what sections you join, but it is alot loss than Target Sports. There's indor and outdoor handgun, outdoor rifle and shotgun. Call Galt tomorrow and ask them for details.

Welcome . You'll likely find all the info you're looking for, and probably lots of stuff you wish you never knew as well.

Is that you in your avatar? (Someone had to ask).

In the same boat

Hi everyone,

I also live downtown Toronto and will be receiving my
PAL/RPAL hopefully this or next week in the mail.

Was considering to join the Forest Hill Revolver Club,
but then I read on another post here that the Royal York Range closed as
of this week.

Target is also somewhat beyond my price range...
Will contact Silverdale and the Galt Club-

The no alone shooting makes things more difficult, but hope to find
something reasonable-

Thanks for your advice.

Welcome :) - always nice to gain more GTA CGN'ers !...

Downtown's not a problem...most anyone who can make it to Finch & Yonge can hitch a ride with me to Silverdale or Target Sports....

Welcome from felow GTA'er. I dont have RPAL only PAL and only shoot on Crown Land, or private property. But will get my RPAL soon and small game licence. Clubs are expensive with too many safety Naz1s imho. Fudd central, have been too a few ranges as a guest but did not really enjoy it.

Check out Range Burlington
Ive been a member for a few years now. Fees are very reasonable.
There are nightly shoots where the range is occupied by different disciplines (Pistol, IPSC, black powder, silhouette, etc.), could be a pro or a con, depends on what you are looking for.
Its a 50m indoor range, open 24/7, shoot pretty much anything you can carry (slugs only in shotgun, no shot).
