!!!Show me your Cerakote/Gunkote finishes!!!

Thanks all for the replies! Some great looking rifle!
Here is a snap of the look that I am consider for the finish:

This will be going on the stock!
Then I will make the barrelled action a combination of the tan and the green (base layer of green and then all the insides of the flutes will be done in the tan) .

Thoughts or suggestions?
A while back I took a Savage MKII BSEV (the one with the spiral fluted barrel) and painted it. I did the stock in a OD Green, tan and black camo that turned out really well. When I did the barrel in tan and the flutes in green, it really made it look very cheap. I'm glad I was just using Krylon be cause I just sprayed it over again with tan. Looks far better now in my opinion, but to each their own. The last photo was what I ended up with.

I know you mentioned using the opposite colour scheme on the barrel, but I think it might have the same effect.

Will Cerakoting a bolt mess up how smooth the action is? Just wondering if I should skip the bolt and just do the barrel. receiver, and bottom metal.

Cerakote will add a certain thickness of finish to the surfaces it is applies too. If you are running a custom action with tight tolerances, do not apply it to the contact surfaces of your bolt. If you're running something like a Rem700 or Savage action you can likely get away with it because they have a lot more tolerance. There is no way I could have put cerakote on my bolt in my Defiance Rebel action (see post 5 of this thread) because of how tight the tolerances are.

The rails my striker slides on we're done and have caused no issue.

Not a bolt action but still a contact surface.

That's the difference. On tighter tolerance bolt actions, it can have a small propensity to feel sticky. Cerakote makes another product for these types of applications, Micro Slick Dry Film Coating. With time it will wear in, but I personally wish I had just left my internals away from cerakote on one particular rifle.

These problems really only manifest themselves when you start to want to run the bolt harder and faster under time, if you aren't doing that, fill your boots!

If you want to do the bolt, use DLC coating. DLC is a black coating and only a few micron thick. I will eventually do it, probably next winter.

cbh560: Would the same thing apply for gunkote when using it on custom actions (stiller tac30)?
I'm not that familiar with Gunkote or Stiller actions, but Google says the ideal thickness is about 0.0004". That would give you an extra 0.0008" in diameter on your bolt. If you were to spray the contact points on the inside of the action, it would again add thickness. I know that my Defiance action is built with VERY tight tolerances. I wouldn't risk it, but others may have some actual experience. The small amount of shiny metal showing through my ejection port really doesn't bother me.

Casey at TacOrd did my Stiller Tac30 in Gunkote, he has used it quite a bit, and now he does/uses Cerakote, give him a call, he will have no problem answering your questions with "real" first hand experience. Good Luck. Cheers

This makes sense, Casey uses Defiance actions, it has his "brand" on them. They are very nice. Cerakote goes on very thin, like maybe .001, most of the time any kind of "letting" will remain visible. The laser engraving on my HK upper was still visible, however the RAL covered the white letters.

Makes sense, it actually is decently thick on some locations

Sorry for the poor quality pic. But mine has the benchmark barrel cerakoted by EM.
