Hello all

Have a stainless zastava on the way along with some other pieces acquired and inbound for a custom Mauser build.

Really interested in seeing custom 98's, especially their bolts.

Especially interested in seeing pictures from anyone who has built one on an fn style swept back bolt and converted it to a straighter more "oberndorfish" handle and how it was done.

For me a bolt handle should have some “sweep” to it. This is one I like. When I get a minute or two today I’ll post a couple of pictures of two I have had done. But here is an example of a nice handle on a Mauser. Getting someone to execute it properly is the toughest part.

Here are two of mine. Not 98’s but the same principle applies. The top one is by Steve Heilmann and the bottom Mark Penrod. Very different, including the bolt root arrangement.

I know you’ve seen my thread about the Husqvarna 146 I built using the services of Chris Griesbach. He does a pretty good straight bolt handle, though if I were to do it again, I would want it slightly longer with a larger ball, or at the very least, checkering under the handle. I have seen others he has done and they are very good with what I think to be just the right proportions both aesthetically and functionally.

^This one had a military K98 handle, cut off, a new one turned and welded on by a talented gunsmith.

This is just a standard FN-style turned down/ swept back knob.

^This is a dakota handle welded on to the stub of a Kar98a bolt handle.

I think the best option is to cut off the existing handle and weld on a new one, rather than do it half-a$$ed by heating and bending.

That’s similar to what I had done. The action is from a JC Higgins rifle in 270 Win that I had Bill Leeper change over to .375 Ruger. McGowan barrel, Timney trigger, barrel band, Talley steel bases and rings. We left the oem left-hand safety. I may change the safety to a M70 style.

I also had Bill remove the swept-back bolt handle and install an Oberndorf-style handle. I prefer the look.

Simple but very cool.

Really like that handle, sharps and the first you posted

What ring height do you have on the 375?

k98 a little ruff and not as classy the others
