So I'm thinking of getting a proper front rest, now that I'm trying to get serious with my BR rimfire shooting.

What do you guys recommend? I'm ready to spend a couple C notes on one, maybe more if the quality is right (buy once, cry once, right? :D). Some pics would be awesome! :dancingbanana:

P.S. If it can double as a non-railed rest so I can use it for my centrefire that would be great, but not completely necessary.

I use a cowan front rest. Overall I really like it. High quality, lots of lateral movement and overall built quite well. Since I bought one a year or two ago two more shooters at our club have bought them (_Shorty and yodave on here). As far as I know they like them as well.

These rests are made by Joe Cowan and a group of his students in the states. He does two "batches" a year - in fall and in spring and then ships them out after he is done. Prices are IMO quite good - around $220-$250 or so plus shipping so all in all it might come out to around $300.

I also have a caldwell rock BR rest and it not as good. Still better than your stanadard caldwell or hoppes rest but not in the same league as the cowan rest.

I use protector bags as well. If you are going to get a good rest - get good bags as well. No sence wasting your money on cheap bags!

lots of rests to choose from

JJ industries, McClusky (see mcClusky precision rifles on br central, (he is dead and they are not made any more so is this alright to post the address where it can be found), sinclair old model (paul ross might sell it I could ask)
and the toggle like a SEB Farley (the other toggles are inferior) same website in rests section,

my advice is buy a sinclair or seb/farley but do not know of anyone in caada who stock them , I stocked farley and seb but again folks can order their own for the same price so why bother. not being smart but I have taken at least a dozen calls in the last 2 months and sold 8 sebs and 1 farley and not made a dime.

I have had most rest made, some at not worth the price of admission, like the farley junior is garbage (had 2 when they first came out), a number of toggle tops have been made, tried all of them but not butchs yet, all were garbage.

the rest will last a lifetime why not spent the funds and get something good.

tony g could post a pic of pauls rest as paul has limited skills at the best of time,

Jefferson

I think the Seb or Farley are just a teensy bit out of my price range

cz452, do you have Joe Cowan's contact? I understand yodave uses this and it seems you two both like it, and for that price I can't complain.

I do have Protector bags, love them. :D

Cool, thanks! :)

Speaking of getting serious, do you know of any competitions for BR rimfire around the Lower Mainland? If I'm gonna embarrass myself, might as well do it around my own backyard :D

Rishu pepper. I have heard about some rimfire BR competitions in the lower mainland before but have never been to any, if there are any for sure that is. We have a benchrest shoot in parksville once a month that you are welcome to try out. Most guys just shoot the anschutz 54's, and there are a couple remington 40X's, valmets and BSA/martinis. I usually shoot my winchester 52D custom (one pictured above) if and when i got. Unfortunately however rimfire benchrest is not a real popular discipline in Canada. From what I understand there are some good matches down in Tacoma and Seattle though every so often.

What kind of gun do you shoot?

Just got myself a Krico 330 from a fellow CGNer. Used to own a CZ452 but financing the Krico caused me to sell it (it was a fine gun to be sure). :)

Perhaps one day I will attend your shoot, probably some time in the summer. :D

Contact horseman2 on this site. He has told me there may be some benchrest in the Mission area.
Cheers

Rest

Brian

The Caldwell Rock BR is a nice rest, should have most of the features you'll need to get the most out of your new 22. I just use bags myself, don't compete. Accuracy has more to do with the shooter than the front rest does. FS

You Bastard, I was going to steal that Krico out from under your nose :D

For everyones info the cowan rest bust me for just over 400.00 to my door, even got Joe to ship usps and got the brokerage down to 71 dollars. The slipping Canadian dollar hurt the deal on that one, not to mention the long wait. I would have just got another caldwell BR model if I had known the final price back one I ordered it but at least the funds went to a good cause.

sorry to hear you gave up the CZ though Rishu, when you replace it just save the time and tears and ship it straight to me next time.

Maybe I'll look at the Caldwell BR anyway. I don't think I can wait until the Fall order for the Cowan...

You know, I'll probably end up with another CZ when it's all said and done. That gun was just a beaut, and for that price there is nothing better. The next time, I'll probably get one with irons, so I can use it for grouse if/when the occasion arises.

Too slow, my good man! :D I'll post some pics of the Krico when it arrives, hopefully in a couple weeks. I'm swamped with work so I probably won't be able to shoot it for a while anyway...

you don't have to tell me about work getting in the way, I hope to get to the range with the Anshutz this weekend but I am on call and have to drag the pager and work phone with me until Tuesday. If I do make it out though I will get some better pictures of the Anshutz and my front rests, also the Izhmash anything else you want to see :D Like my Brno number 4 with the 48 power leupold target scope :D

48x?? WTF?

And the Cowan rest, no need to rub it in, my good man! :D

Let's hope the Krico arrives within the 10 day estimate, then I can post pics of my own. It's been a while since I've had a new gun, I miss the feeling
