The Trooper Mk III use a completely different lockworks then the original Trooper. The Mk III was finessed later into the Mk V, which became the King Cobra. They are coil spring guns instead of leaf springs, and used progressively more MIM parts. Still good guns though, I own a few of them in 22, 22 Mag and 357. - dan
 
Perhaps its worth adding that the Model 357 internals are exactly what the Python uses without the extra polish ; ) I do love my(oops my wife's) KC with its stainless steel springs.

heres mine!! I havent done any research into when it was made but i recently picked up these wood grips, can anyone tell me about just the grips? they have a silver medallion, the pacmyers are what came on it originally but the woodies are growing on me :p

Nice unit. The grips are fully checkered, that makes them First Generation from 1955 to early sixties. However they are not Python rather Trooper ones because of the silver medallion, Python's were allways Gold. They started using silver ones in the mid 1995s in the First Gen grips and mixing with gold one. Hope this helps. First stainless Pythons came out in 1983. You have PM.

Hey guy, it's an item we've discussed previously, concerning my early production Python,
#20**, 1957-58.



When I got the opportunity to purchase this one, my 2nd, the gentleman I got it from stated he purchased it as is years back, new, from a Colt dealer or distributor. It has the silver medallion and as far as I've been told by some of his fellow club members, he'd used it very little. In discussions with some fairly knowledgeable Colt enthusiasts/collectors, they indicated, while the majority of the early Pythons did come with grips having the gold medallions, some of the early production runs did come with grips having silver medallions. And I understand one of these guys I met at a gun show a couple of years ago is hot & heavy into one of the Colt Collector forums.
:redface:A little damp for a piece of sugar like me to go for a bike ride this morning so with that spare time on my hands, I thought I'd try phoning the Colt 1-800 number to see if they could shed some light. I thought my next birthday would come first but I finally got someone on line. Without any definative numbers, he echoed what I heard frim the guy at the gun show a couple years ago.

Yes,:redface: on some of the variables, I'm not sure one way or the other. As just a shooter, my first draw to the Python was on that basis. From all I could find out prior to deciding to get one was that they are a high quality revolver, plus,;) they do have a distinct look of class. And when I was doing a fair amount of regular 'paper punching', the 'snake' showed it wasn't a slouch there, with light or heavy load diet.

Well I guess I should show a picture of my Colt Python 38 Special Target Revolver with an 8 inch barrel. The Smith and Wesson Model 29 in the background is another really nice revolver I enjoy.

Posted pics in another thread, but belongs here to. I recently got this imported from the USA. It came with rubber grips but I changed them out to the nice looking wooden ones you see below. Love it!

Holy crap, just when I thought I was having a hard time finding one Colt .357 you have to show me this. Your friend has a very nice collection of .357's.
