Sick of being gouged, LOOKING FOR SOME GUYS FOR A POWDER ORDER GROUP

I've got a question for fellow re-loaders on the Island.

I,ve been reloading now for going on a couple of years but getting gun powder without paying through the nose for it is a problem, so far I've been paying just about $40 a pound for my powder (mostly H4831) and really I'm getting tired of being gouged, I know shipping cost for getting powder here is nuts but is charging $37-$38 a pound justified.

anyway I'm wondering if some guys here would like to get together and form a group for for ordering to cut down on cost?

I've already had a guy at our gun club offer to let me in on the group they have but it seem to be just that, just an offer, I've emailed him a few times now about ordering with them but he never answers, so I may as well assume that I've got no chance of getting in with their group. ???????
so if there's any islanders out there who would seriously like to get together and save some money then let's talk. I know I'm not the only one here paying this crazy cost for powder

Fork out the $$ for 21lbs at higginsons, get free shipping. compared to the $40 you are paying, you're getting about 7 lbs for free.
 
Those are really high powder prices....

I'm paying $25/lbs for Hodgdon H4895, H4831, and H110 from LeBarons and then take 10% off for my membership card. I don't remember exactly what I pay for my Alliant Unique and Blue Dot but I think it's around $28-32/lbs. LeBarons doesn't carry Alliant powder so I get it from the local Stittsville range store which is owned by the same family that owns Bowmac Gunpar; the wholesaler.
 
I took a trip over to the mainland. Vancouver, 1 lb RL-22 was $33. Over here on Vancouver Island, I had to pay $49 from Island Outfitters.

Gouge much?
 
we pay between 32-37 a pound here in NS so your prices are not that unreal.try buying some from other club members.if they are getting it in bulk orders for 20 bucks/pound they might sell you some for 25.they make a few bucks,you save a few win/win.
 
If you order Higginson's 21 pounds(for free shipping) you stand to save 315 bucks which is probably worthwhile. Get 21 guys together for a pound apiece and you may test out your pain in the ass threshhold.

My semi annual orders usually amount to a couple thousand dollars worth of yearly saveings, depending where the local dealers are on their assrape cycle.


If you specify 8 pound jugs you will probably get it that way. If not, how do you feel about cardboard boxes?
 
I think 40 is high. For the hell of it I just did the math on my last batch order last fall and with the free shipping from Ontario and we averaged about 26.00 / pound by buying bulk and sharing.
 
Ic my dealer upped his price from $36.99 to $39.99 when the new stock arrived this spring. Did powder go up accross the board.
Checked out a site sponcer ( Prophet River Firearms ) There selling powder for $29.00 or $145.00 for 5lbs.
Think I'm changing dealers.
 
OP should definitely check out Higginson Powders. Free Shipping if you order 21 lbs. It's the only way to save money when you're not in a major population area.

I hear you....

The cost of H4831 powder at Wholesale Sports in Cour d'lene Idaho is $23.99/lb. Just dont let homeland security catch you bringing it out of their country.:D

The same powder in a Canadian Wholesale Sports is 35... oh wait they dont have any thing in stock. Never mind.
 
I've ordered other reloading supplies from Higginsons, mostly bullets, dies, stuff like that, I've also checked out ordering powder from them, the thing is 21 pounds is a bit much for my personal use, that's why I'm trying to get a group together, to cut the cost

I am surprised though to hear the cost of powder in other provinces are even close to what it is here, I still think it's gouging no matter where it is.

I know for a fact that some of these places are getting it from Higginsons and are ordering more then 21 pounds and then charging between $37 and $38 for it, do the math, that's a pretty decent profit

absolutely awesome to deal with! I had my stuff in three days (minus DHL/Loomis screw-ups)

get a few guys together, do a bulk order.
 
Gouging isn't the right word for it. They are applying free market principles and charging for the convenience of having it available locally.

It's up to the consumer to decide what he wants to pay - a higher price for letting somebody else do all the work bringing it in, or a lower price and do the legwork yourself. If you only shoot a couple pounds a year, then it's not really a big del to pay $10 more to have somebody bring it in for you. If you use 10-20 lbs a year then it might be worth the effore to contact Higginson yourself.
