So I was hunting with a quad this weekend, and it was awesome. Now comes the time where I look into getting my own quad, and I zilch about them. Please school me on do's and dont's and what to look for in a practical one?

Thanks!

you'll be limited to wider trails with a utv and overhead clearance can be an issue on unmaintained trails so a chainsaw should definitely be an item in your kit. besides that, you'll go almost anywhere an atv will if you have decent tires. only get a utv if you're actually gonna use it as many guys with atv's switch to utv's and regret the trade.

polaris razr and yamaha rhino are the most popular around here with the odd canned ham mixed in. i hear kawi makes a good side x side as well.

Yep Standard model RZR & the Yam Rhino are only slightly wider than most atvs & will go most places they will. I like quality of Yam products, Pols not so much.

Yamaha would probably be one of the better ones, they are a little narrow than some of the others. Kawasaki have electrical problems usually after a couple of years.
Might want to look at a polaris 6x6 as they have a good size box on it. The older ones are chain driven(more maintence) and the newer ones are shaft drive and they can get tracks for these also. I think that two quads are better than one if one gets into trouble.

I love my Rhino 660. It has served me very well with little maintenance. If you are set on getting a side by side I would recommend finding a good used Rhino 660. The new Rhino's have a weaker transmission. As for the "wideness" of them, I've had very little problems keeping up with any ATV.
If you want further details feel free to PM me with your questions.

Give a lot of thought to the terrain you will hunt. They look great and are very comfortable. But, they won't go everywhere a quad will.

I have seen a couple where I hunt moose, but they are very limited to what trails they can travel and only come in during Nov when everything is frozen.

Load that thing up with gear and get it stuck and you could be in for a miserable time getting it out. Lots of times we have needed two winches to get a quad out of musk keg or "sucking" mud. I can only imagine how bad a SxS would be in those same situations.

There are comfortable two up quads too, and the Polaris X2 is a great hunting quad. I know some hate Polaris, but you can't argue it's practicality.

The polaris RZR is the narrowest right now (around 51") I have slightly wider aftermarket wheels on my Kawi brute force and it is wider than a stock RZR!

Ground clearance is adequate but many complain of bottoming out and add a lift to help. Deep water is troublesome as you are sitting lower and can't get up and out of it like a quad.

I'm probably going to pick up a RZR sometime in the next year but I think I will keep the Kawi in case the SxS does not fit the bill for me.

found out that Polaris now makes a 570 RZR. that sounds like a fun little machine. probably less maintenance due to less power than the 800. has the same body as the standard 800 RZR, but has a new engine (built by the people that built the new 900 RZR engine). just my .02
