Side Rail For Mounting Optics on CZ 858

Browsing the 858 optics thread there are some custom methods used to mount the side rails. Is there nothing available from a dealer to mount the rail to, seeing as the side walls are too thin for the drill and tap method.

I see Zahal has some dust cover rails that clamp to the receiver, but $300 is a bit steep for just it.

Could a CSA 58 rail be drilled and tapped with any success, or maybe drilled, tapped, and then mig/tig welded to reall keep it on there?

Drill the receiver and the mounting rail together, then tap the rail and screw it on from the inside.

I would like to keep the iron sights functional as back-up.

I'm lucky enough to have an 858 Canadian Edition so the NEA rear stock adapter with top rail is out of the question as well - I paid for the wood I'm going to damn well leave it on there.

The dust cover rail seems like a great idea, it's just soo pricey and takes away from the "red rifle" look that the CSA side rail does everything to enhance.

From what I know of them the dust cover rails are not good at all. I was suggesting a mount that replaced the rear sight.

Here's the pictures you asked me to post.

That looks good. The bolt heads have a nice low profile as well.

I think I'm going to go this route as well. Seems like more work than the railed dust cover but the ease of putting on and taking off the optic would be a total breeze.

Thanks so much for posting those photos!

Nice job! We have the original CZ heavy duty side rails, HERE. WE also stock rail mount optic platforms to go with them.

I was looking at your website recently. Do you know of any local area gunsmiths (Lower Mainland, BC) that you would recommend to install it? I'm not comfortable enough with my meager skills to be drilling a receiver.

What do you know is wrkng with the dustcover rail??

I have one and its the best possible mount for the CZ. Holds zero every single time i have to clean the rifle. Iron sights can still be used. Doesnt add additional weight.like the scope mount base and scope mount.
So whats wrong with them??? (other then the 200$ price)

I picked up a rail from Zahal, got a gunsmith to mount for $45. So far quite happy.

Got this mount also, at first I thought it would be too far back, but with the scope positioned here I was still getting case hits on the scope

So I have moved it back and will see how it goes.

Must have been thinking of the crappy sks rear cover mounts

The vz cover mount looks awesome, but it's a quarter of the price of the rifle

My observation was based on just about every dustcover rail, except the CZ as I have not yet seen one. It's nice to hear they are good.

My side rail and mount arrived from Czechoslovakia for my CSA 5.56mm yesterday. The rail was an easy fit. The only gripe I have is with the lever on the mount, it is very fragile.

I also bought the magazine well conversion kit for AR mags, it's dead easy to install once you know how. The instructions are fantastic, it only took me two hours to figure out how to fit it properly.
