it was brought to my attention today that a side saddle on an 870 covers the serial number.
is this a legal problem? or is it allright cause its not permenatly made unreadable?

thanks,
Joe

Not a problem. If it were then many revolver owners would have also have a problem. The serial number on many revolvers is on the butt and they are often covered by the grips.

Mesa has a nice saddle that leave the serial visible, it's really well made. I did not get to try it on yet as both my wingmasters are away for park/teflon. I'll post pics as soon as they come back.

I noticed this the other day with my Mossberg and it's new side saddle as well.

I simply keep a small Allen key for the rear bolt holding the side saddle so I can remove it and then pivot the side saddle up enough to get at the serial numbers.

One of those things at a road side check that would probably cause you grief if you couldn't get at it for show and tell.

But if you are really worried you could always order one of those little decals from the CFC.
