Sierra bullets any good?

I prefer Hornady bullets. Not because they're better than Sierras but because they're considerably cheaper and easier to get. In my rifles, Hornadys shoot just about the same as Sierras, I see no accuracy advantage. For precision shooting, I prefer Bergers or Hornady ELD or AMAX bullets.

AMAX are no more. I have a few left from a large bulk purchase but they will be gone this year. Sierra bullets blow Hornady out of the water for accuracy, because they are much more consistent in weight and ogive to base length. But, yes the Hornady are cheaper and if you are happy with them then that is good. Berger hybrids are really nice but ouch - and I do mean OUCH! Pricey bastards.

I echo what others have said - Accuracy and consistency I found better with Sierra, had nothing but grief with the 3 different Hornady bullets i tried (2 match bullets, 1 hunting)

In my opinion they are very good target, varmint and deer sized game bullets. I use a bullet built stronger for larger game, where penetration and core retention start to matter more than accuracy.

I have not used sierra in the configuration your talking.. but that being said, i have shot Nosler, Swift, Hornady, Speer, Barns, Berger and Sierra.... I have always said.. if your rifle wont shoot.. try a sierra... if a sierra wont shoot.. nothing will... they are my go to in all my calibers(all but one) for hunting and target shooting..

In dads 204 the most accurate and coyote crushing bullet is the 39gr Sierra Blitzking
In my 22-250 i was using 50gr V max for years and found myself moving to a Sierra Varminter.. there more accurate and devastating on coyotes.
In Dads 308 i personally seen a 165gr Sierra SPBT Gameking enter the front of a doe @ 150 yards and leave just infront of the rear left leg taking the guts and intestines with it... whom ever said they are not a tough cup n core are prolly the best in my books and always the most accurate.
In my 7mm-08 i USED and WILL AGIAN the Sierra 160gr HPBT Gameking after taking a big doe @ 225 having a 4" exit taking the top of the heart and bottom of the lungs and 2 ribs. Now i use the 139 Hornady GMX just for a change.. (I also use the 175gr Match and its the most accurate bullet i have ever used for long range shooting). when i get my deer this year i will then decide what way im going to go but at the end of the day i will always be please with Sierra
In my 338-06 i use the 215gr Sierra Game king.. No game with it but they are tough and VERY accurate.

So as you can see.. I can vouch for Sierra. there my favourite bullet. sure there more expensive then others but you pay for quality.. i weight others like Speer and had over 5 grs difference in there 30cal 165gr Grand slams. Speer came clean and sent me a mouse pad and a hat but were "STILL IN THERE SPECK" i know for a fact that i can go and weigh my sierra and they will usualy all be bang on or within .1-.2 gr.

good luck
Josh

I have shot about 35 Moose with the 160 grain Sierra boat tail in my 7MM Remington Magnum.
I have never had an animal get away when hit by this bullet.
Also quite a few bears and wolves.

Certain Sierra bullets were designed with a specific purpose. These tend to be very tough bullets for a cup and core offering.
I have some 220 grain Game Kings, designed for the 8mm Rem Mag. They are some tough, but will separate when shot into
an Elk close up.. Similarly, the 215 and 250 grain - 338 Game Kings. For the most part, Sierra bullets tend to be quite accurate.
However, I only hunt them in chamberings that do not chase the bullet too hard. [I like the 303 - 180 grain Pro-Hunter in my 303
British] Dave.

I load some of there bullets for my centerfire .22's and a couple other cartridges. Haven't used any but the .224 gamekings on living things. Not my favorite hunting bullet but they usually shoot well. I'd try the prohunters in my .243 and if accurate I'd happily kill deer with it.

I have been using 30 cal 180grn out of a 30-06 for 10 years and they have been great. Took 2 black bears this spring with them and recovered one that was a classic mushroom. The others passed through. I would not use them if velocity was too fast. After all, they are just a cup and core design.

Took a brand new Stevens 200 in 25-06 out today. Brought some hand loads to try out in this 'new to me' calibre. After 7 rounds to get the scope dialed in, this was the best result.

48 gr of imr 4350 under a 100gr Sierra spitzer gave me a 1.13 group outside edge to outside edge. Minus .25 for the calibre and thats a .88 group. ( correct me if im wrong).
Not bad for a new calibre and load in a 350$ rifle with a battered bushnell on top.
So yeah i like Sierra bullets.
